Thanks, I believe most offices evacuated the building (not sure about the residential). The front desk staff was told it is "sewage" but the smell is very distinct....
Is this the same odor problem that's been going on for months, or something new? I work in this building and to me the odor in the hallways today smells more like a worse version of the trash-like smell we've been experiencing for months.
And FYI, neither our office nor the YMCA has evacuated, nor were aware anyone else had. I just poked around the halls and lobby and don't smell gas at all, just the same trash/sewage smell as usual. Very odd.
It seems very different from the trash odor that we have smelled in the budding previously. It appears to be something new, and many have said it smells similar to a gas leak (started noticing around 2pm and consistently got stronger)
I called the PMC management office, located on Church Street @4pm today and spoke with Laura, one of the leasing agents. She said that it was the City of New Haven flushing out the sewage system in the tunnel, and they didn't have advance notice on when it was scheduled so that is why the building was not made aware in advance. She acknowledged that the phone was ringing off the hook in the office with concerned residents.
Whenever you smell something that may be natural gas immediately either call 911 or the gas company emergency number 800 513-8898. It is better to be safe then sorry. You can then post to alert others and to have a record that it was called in.
