I believe the law is based on ADA standards which call for 48" from outside of curb to obstruction.

The bigger problem on State Street is that the bricks are not even so the passable area for a wheel chair or stroller is more difficult.

Should we open an issue to have the city level or reset the bricks on State Street?

Was their fence out further recently?

ADA building guidelines specify 36" minimum clearance; see http://www.access-board.gov/adaag/html/adaag.htm#4.3. I can't speak to any city or state regulations. Maybe the local alderman or another city representative can let us know about these.

Regardless of the legal issue, it is inconsiderate to make the sidewalk impassable to strollers and wheelchairs. I make a point not to patronize any business that doesn't respect its neighbors.

It appears that goodfellas has moved there's in about 12".

I will say something to Jon at Dempseys.
Maybe he could level the bricks in fron to make the passable area bigger.

i love dempseys and i am happy they are in my neighborhood, but if i was in a wheelchair, or had a child stroller, this would seem like way too little space.

Agree that there is not enough room here for comfortable pedestrian circulation.

Just helped John at dempseys push in the rail so there is the required 48" clear to the t pole. I believe goodfellas while it may appear obstructive is w/n code already. Please repose if u have more problems.

If u go by have a drink at dempseys and let John know u appreciate him moving it. I did :)
