Or I suppose you could just see the truck and figure out all on your own that the bike lane is blocked and go around the truck.

I'm raising this as an issue because I'm concerned that other road users will *not* see this as a zipper merge, and not allow cyclists to safely merge to get around the truck. All I'm asking for is to treat this the same way we treat any other lane closure, with proper signage and adequate warning. Seems like a pretty reasonable request.

I'm confused as to how blocking the lane isn't a ticketable offense? The permits, as I understand them, are for reserving the parking spots, not for blocking the streets. Could the Police please let us know if these permits allow for blocking lanes?

CPD response is very unhelpful especially in light of the number of bicyclists using the roadways nowadays. I keep urging people to notify CPD when they see a bike lane violation. Maybe that's poor advice on my part.

Narrow parking lane + wide truck = No choice but to extend into bike lane.

Notifying the departments of obstructions is encouraged, but please do keep in mind that officers can only respond if they are available and nearby.

The City re-striped various streets, including this one, to encourage motor vehicle operators to park closer to the curb. This is a great improvement for cyclists, but it also means that some extra-wide vehicles cannot physically fit within the space between the curb and the stripe. When these streets were striped with a generous "guideline" it was easy for a truck to fit between the curb and the guideline. The new configuration is very much preferable, but it also means that we all have to be a bit forgiving when some vehicles have to extend beyond the new stripe.

Issues like this should be reported as they occur to the Cambridge Police Department Non-Emergency line at 617-349-3300 so that units can be dispatched to the location at the time such issues are seen. This system is best suited to respond to service requests like potholes, street lights, rodent issues, etc. that can be assigned to staff and addressed in a timely manner.

However, your concerned has been shared with the appropriate departments so that this report can be taken into consideration as we study future roadway design and enforcement efforts.
