I don't understand why the city cancelled two events that bring people into the city. People who spend money. Why doesn't the city find another way to cut the budget or charge people to attend the fireworks? They could charge $5.00 a head, and make money.

I like the idea of creating a private foundation, especially for the Christmas tree. It would make a lot of sense considering the whole separation of church and state thing and the fact that the Green itself is owned by a private foundation.

IKEA and other Long Wharf businesses, including New Haven Register just funded the fireworks, according to the newspaper. They will be set off from the summit of East Rock. There is a huge benefit for the Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument fund that day at the summit, so for ticket holders (if you do not have a ticket, you cannot go up the rock)to the benefit activities, including the great Ernie WIlliams blues band, this is just fantastic!

when i first heard of the cuts, i thought knights of columbus should donate a christmas tree since they have a bizillion dollars and they are in town, and like jesus a lot.

Yes, Thank you IKEA! Now is find someone for the holiday displays in the Green. Might be a nice idea for both Knights of Columbus and Jewish Community Center since both of these holiday traditions are represented each year.

As for more cuts...how about furloughing nonessential city workers the days between Xmas and New Year's?

How about furlouging the non-essential mayor for a month to cover the costs? And a permanent move to East Rock Park so the fireworks can be much more accessible to more people?
