The extra turn lane on Elm between Temple and Church threatens public health and safety by inducing unsafe speeds. I can think of a long list of ways in which the excess capacity on this portion of Elm harms our lives; however, I will spare you the details because I'm typing this on my iPod. Suffice it to say that this extra turn lane is an economically inefficient use of valuable public space. Sorely-needed on-street parking would be a much better use of this lane.

I agree. A larger plaza in front of the library would be nice.
Currently a lot of kids going to the library hang out there and almost get clipped by trucks as they speed past.
I'd say fill in the lane with a plaza space, and bollards separating it from the road. You could also add covered bike racks and some small benches, maybe a grass strip and some trees.
That would be much more attractive - appearance is key for economic development.

Has there been any progress on this?
I know the city transportation department's annual reports in recent years have mentioned rebuilding Elm Street, but not sure if the planning process has begun.
Would anyone like to work on completing an official "complete streets" request?
