Description
Very loud motorcycles drive down Whitney Avenue many times per day, and sometimes in the middle of the night, revving their engines, accelerating as fast as they can, and generally making much more noise than necessary. This aggressive and obnoxious behavior is hugely disruptive to what is otherwise a peaceful residential neighborhood. Is there any possibility of enforcing noise ordinances?

The New Haven Police Department, the Mayor, and our Aldemen need to address excessive noise from motorcycles and cars and enforce New Haven‘s noise ordinance.
This ongoing problem degrades the quality of life for all city residents. In addition to disrupting the daily life of New Haven’s citizenry, both during our collective sacred moments in places of warship, during our concerts and theatrical productions, and in our private moments of thought, loud cars and motorcycles are also a health hazard and negatively affect New Haven’s economy. Businesses such as restaurants with outdoor cafés are negatively affected. Who wants who sit in an outdoor café with loud cars and motorcycles driving by. More importantly, real estate values along all of New Haven‘s avenues, Whitney, Whalley, Dixwell, State and all of our streets are suppressed due to noise. I know people who will not live in New Haven due to the noise. Noise pollution Is one of the major factors cited for the exodus of people from cities into suburbs across the entire country, and in our fair city of New Haven. This negatively affects real estate values and our city’s tax base.
Our elected officials, our public servants and the men in blue, whose salaries we pay, need to enforce New Haven’s noise ordinance, issue tickets, and if necessary, confiscate bikes and cars. The citizens of New Haven have a basic right to a reasonable level of quietude.
Off duty men in blue have been known to participate in the riding of loud motorcycles, which I have personally witnessed and which has been reported in the press, breaking the law of New Haven’s noise ordinance. This behavior has to be reprimanded by the chief of police.
Meter maids should also issue tickets for cars and motorcycles with illegal aftermarket exhaust systems parked along city streets Meter maids and police need to be trained to spot illegal aftermarket exhaust systems, which are easily identified when looking at the exhaust pipe of a car or motorcycle.
Catalytic converters are often removed from these vehicles to help make them louder, which of course greatly increases air pollution from the vehicle and is also also illegal. This law also needs to be enforced.
Taking these actions will improve the quality of life for New Haven’s citizenry, increase our real estate values, increase our city tax coffers, and positively affect everyone. It’s time to start enforcing New Haven‘s noise ordinance. Thank you!
