It just opened last night. Perhaps the music was a one time thing for the grand opening? I do understand your point though. Lots of condos in that area. I don't think I'd be happy either but it may be the price to pay for living downtown amongst restaurants and businesses. You can't move downtown and then complain because it's noisy.

Jane, I've lived downtown since long before Salem became the "happening" nighttime spot. Many others have been here for quite a while too. Evening noise was never much of an issue. But, clearly, a rooftop club is completely inconsiderate.

I agree with the original poster. I couldn't get to sleep last night either because of the Hotel rooftop. They need to close the rooftop by 10 at the latest.

Minutes from the Licensing Board meeting held on 4/24/17 :

Application for a new Annual All Alcohol Liquor License granted through Home Rule petition and a Pledge of the License. Applicant: Hotel Salem Op Co., LLC.
Attorney Correnti and Shawn Shea, one of the principals presented the application. Attorney Correnti said they spent some time chasing a full liquor license that was not available and was approved for a license through the Home Rule process. Mr. Shea said the hotel is already live in line and taking reservations for early fall. Chairman St. Pierre asked about seating and parking. Mr. Shea said that parking is an evolving plan and it may be spilt up and offer some valet services. Mr. Flores asked how many rooms the hotel will have. Mr. Shea said 44. Chairman St. Pierre asked about deliveries. Mr. Shea said same as the other business; out on the pedestrian mall and that they would be out front during the allowed times. Attorney Correnti said that there will be a rooftop deck and then a restaurant that will be street level to Derby Square side entrance. He said the rooftop will accommodate about 170 people while the 1st floor restaurant will accommodate about 70. He said that downstairs there will be a bar area with shuffleboard games. He said they will be hosting a good number of weddings on the rooftop deck from 4-7pm. He said there will not be any late music up there. He said from the rooftop they will be able to continue on downstairs. He said there will be hotel rooms right under the rooftop with guests staying in them so they have to be aware of noise. He said they will be back in September for the Entertainment piece. He said there are several local investors and this is a part of Lark Hotels which also operates the Merchant Hotel and it will be very professionally operated. He said they are also asking for a Pledge of the License to go Reading Co- op.
From the public Ryan Best, abutter said he has some concerns. He said the back door where people maybe hanging out and smoking and exiting is 25 feet from his windows. He said they become the victims of that. He said he earlier asked Mr. Shea about making that an emergency exit so patrons couldn’t use that door and he said that was not going to happen. He said he wanted to make the Board aware of these concerns now. He said it’s all brick back there and sound travels. He said
these are issues that have not been addressed. Mr. Shea said he can go to the City and see if they can design an area for smoking as it is the City’s property not theirs. Mr. Best said that would be great and that this needs some resolution. An elderly woman who lives directly above Mr. Best said she agrees with Mr. Bests comments. She asked again about deliveries and trash. Mr. Shea said that would all happen out front of the building. Chairman St. Pierre said that when it’s a mixed business and residential area the Board always tries to work out a balance. Mr. Shea said this is run as a hotel first. Sgt. Gaudet asked if there would be more staff on in October. Mr. Shea there most likely would be. Mr. Flores motioned to approve. Mr. Lee seconded. Chairman St. Pierre said motion carries.

What is mentioned of the establishments license in regards to people drinking on the rooftop? 20-100 people drinking up there is no less noisy and disturbing than piped music.

The legal occupancy limit for that space is 180 persons.

From Thursday-Sunday we have had to tolerate the crowd of people drinking on the rooftop until at least 10:45 each evening. That is followed by at least an hour of staff cleanup. This is completely unfair to residents in this area. There shouldn't be any activity on that rooftop past 10:00 pm.

It is now 10:20pm Tuesday and they are playing music on the rooftop. Clearly they are not abiding by their license.

Since the hotel rooftop has been open (8 nights) I have been kept awake past midnight for 7 nights. Guests have been out drinking each night until past 11:00 pm and then the staff continues on with the clinging of glass and dishes until past midnight. Now this morning I was awakened at 4:20 am from an employee on the roof discussing not being able to bring more product in because there wasn't room in the refrigerators. So, out of 8 nights I was able to get 5.5 hours sleep for 6, and 4 hours sleep for one. I have no option - my bedrooms are located facing the roof. This is very unfair for myself and other residents in the neighborhood. NO ONE should be on that rooftop past 10: pm Sunday-Thursday evenings. Could someone kindly point me in the right direction on this issue?

Get lawyers. The hotel knows what their restrictions are. You should be paid for every violation.

I would seek help from the licensing board in Salem. They control liquor licensing and hours of operation. Violations can result in suspension to serve for a specified period of time among other things. They also have a member of the police department that can go there and observe the violations.

So, basically, this "SeeClickFix" site doesn't actually accomplish anything?

Licensing Office has been notified as a result of this request, but the question was: "Could someone kindly point me in the right direction on this issue?" The post above provides the information about the correct offices to call to report these types of incidents.

Last night they were playing music until 10:20. It's not allowed past 9:00. Then, the cleanup crew were out until 11:35 making a racket. This is completely unfair to those of us that need to get up for work early.

Just wondering...did they have neighborhood meetings prior to the building of that hotel? Currently, I don't reside in the downtown area (but have lived in Salem for many years). However, I do a lot of walking around the downtown area (my sister lives off of the Common), and I wondered how things were going to be for all the neighbors when I first heard about that hotel going in over there. I do feel that often times the money coming in from builders/developers seems to take precedence over the neighborhood resident's concerns.

I have to wonder what the relationship is between the owner and the mayor? A supporter? This is insane. The city has posted the hours and limitations and encouraged residents to call and complain yet the problem continues.Enough is enough Salem. Take action and shut this rooftop problem down. Maybe a 3 day suspension would be a first step after dozens of complaints

I have called the Police once. I am not going to call them every night. I posted my issues here. I also sent a note to the Licensing Board. From what I understand, they were approved for wedding functions. The hotel attorney said they will be hosting a good number of weddings on the rooftop deck from 4-7pm. He said there will not be any late music up there. He said from the rooftop they will be able to continue downstairs. He said there will be hotel rooms right under the rooftop with guests staying in them so they have to be aware of noise they make. Well, that's not the situation. The rooftop is nothing more than a bar with hundreds of people drinking until late at night. We can no longer get to sleep before 12:30. The noise from the rooftop travels directly into our bedrooms. As the hotel said, the guests can continue downstairs (where they will disturb no one). This should happen at 9:00 pm and the staff needs to be off the roof by 9:30 - and SHUT THE LIGHTS OFF.

Last night (Sat July 7) the Hotel Rooftop had music playing at 10:30 pm. I had to get up for work at 5:00 am. I drove to my mother's and slept there. This needs to be fixed.

Why is this issue not being properly resolved?

This is all politics.
