Description

Vehicles on Huntleigh Dr. turning left into the IHOP driveway are often blocked by traffic, thus creating a backup extending into Capital Blvd. and can partially block the south bound lane of Capital. A possible solution is that a stop bar painted on the road surface of Huntleigh Dr. could alert traffic to not block the driveway.

Another possible solution is for people to follow the law and not enter an intersection unless they are able to cross it completely. It's not the people who are stopping in front of the IHOP driveway that are in the wrong - it's the drivers turning left on to Huntleigh knowing they can't complete their manuver fully and end up sitting in the intersection with Capital. Those "Do Not Block Intersection" signs that you see some places don't mean that intersection is special and all others can be blocked if traffic is backed up, they're just a reminder for intersections that have a particular problem with this issue but it doesn't matter if there's a sign or not - blocking an intersection because you don't have room on the other side is always wrong.

There is 125' of vehicle storage on Huntleigh Dr. 1 passenger vehicle requires 25' and 1 truck requires 60' of roadway storage. Thus allowing 6 passenger vehicles to stand on Huntleigh Dr. before impeding traffic on Capital Blvd. Another possible solution is to place signs alerting drivers that if the first vehicle is turning into the IHOP driveway and you are the 7th vehicle in that particular traffic motion, then you could block the intersection.

The 7th driver is not always aware of the first, third, or sixth driver's intentions before entering the intersection. Capital Blvd.'s left hand turn signals do not stay green long enough to evaluate the driving intentions of the half dozen drivers proceeding before you. There is clearly an ongoing issue here.

The real solution does seem to be for drivers on Huntleigh to stop blocking the entrance/exit to IHOP so cars can simply approach and turn left. A line painted on Huntleigh with a "Do Not Block" sign should get the message across.

roads and streets in NC are maintained by NCDOT, contact them with your request to add additional signs, closing

It seems iHop would buy the parking lot adjacent and patrons can enter further down Huntleigh instead of being so close to the beginning of Huntleigh. I agree it's a problem, but the light is very fast when you are in the lane going straight or left. Drivers don't want to have a gap to ensure you make the light. The light on Capital is quite a long wait but doesn't offer enough time for Huntleigh drivers entering the intersection to get across. I personally have waited for two light cycles because of how short the opportunity is to go through or turn left.
