These spots should be blocked off by flex posts or bike racks to prevent parking and allow pedestrians and drivers a line of sight in the cross walk.

To clarify, this has always been a legal parking spot. It wasn't relined when Pleasant Street was done last year due to construction going on at the corner. The unsafe condition largely occurs when vehicles cut across (illegally) to Dartmouth Street, going against the flow of Pleasant St. Traffic. We will ask that a sign be posted indicating left turn only coming out of Middlesex.

I have a suggestion: make that section of Middlesex one-way going the opposite direction like it used to. It's the path to least resistance. And it makes it a lot safer for pedestrians who have no idea if today is the day they get hit. That way, traffic is only coming down Pleasant Street and nobody is playing Frogger to get to the garage.

In addition to the other good suggestions here: MPD needs to stop passing the buck. They need to start enforcing traffic laws. And they need to stop promising residents increased traffic enforcement and then failing to deliver. Think about it: When is the last time you saw a Malden officer on the side of a road operating stationary radar? When is the last time that you saw them monitoring and ticketing at a particularly dangerous crosswalk or stop sign? If you're like me, the answer is probably never. And I've lived here for close to 20 years now.

The FACT of the matter is that MPD issues a small fraction of the citations of similarly-sized surrounding municipalities. Here are the numbers from the City' own 2016 Management Letter:

That is an abysmal record. As the City's comment appended to the auditor's description of the problem indicates, it is the direct result of a policy choice made at the top of the organization. Simply put, it is the official position of MPD that traffic enforcement is not a priority. Our roads are dangerous and are getting more so on a daily basis. And that is a direct result of the choices being made by MPD.
