  These people are already dealing with so much and with little or no support. Until we have better resources to help the growing homeless population, I can't begrudge them these encampments.

  So little support??? There is an army of advocates out. There are more than 50 listings in Oakland for shelter services. Nearly every one of these poor folks I have dealt with do not want any help other than cash for there addictions Nearly every encampment is a filthy nasty mess why because these street people simply do not care or want the help being offered. It hard to have empathy for people who will not even try a little.

  David Coleman, your anger comes across loud and clear but from what I've read from sources I trust --including numerous exposes on NPR-- I can't see it the way you do. Shelters that are unsafe or difficult to get into just don't cut it (especially women). Yes, there are a lot of mental issues out there (I would imagine living on the street and the tremendous and continuous stress would make most people unstable). And again, no proper services to address mental illness... There's nothing fun or easy about that kind of life and as the disparity between those at the top and those at the bottom ( and even the middle) continue to grow more and more people are becoming homeless. Other cities have been much better at finding solutions and solving this issue truly benefits us all. Check out what Cities like Ft Worth, TX; Albuquerque NM; Portland ME are doing and how much they've turned the problem around and helped homeless people help the city thrive while giving the homeless the services they need to turn their lives around. It CAN be done and we don't need to reinvent the wheel, just use the examples already worked through.
