Description
This mattress has been sitting in front of 216 Dwight Street for the past two weeks. Landlord has not made an effort to properly dispose of this bulk trash item. Tenants similarly appear unconcerned. The mattress is now soaked from recent rains and has killed the grass in the tree belt underneath it.
216 Dwight Street is frequently the site of complaints, whether it's trash dumped in the street or refusal to mow the front lawn or frozen water supply pipes burst under the sidewalk etc. The garage behind the house burned down several years ago.
The owner of this house needs to be fined for negligence because money is the only thing this absentee landlord understands. The tenants, year after year, are a clueless bunch of transients who have no idea of the historical value of this property.
216 Dwight Street was built by New Haven's first black dentist in the style of the domestic architecture of Barbados to please his wife who came from that island. It has deteriorated over the years to the point that those of us in the neighborhood who value our architectural history are very worried that renovation may no longer be an option.
