Description
Turpentine/chemicals in neighborhood water system. Our home and neighbors’ homes smell strongly of turpentine or paint thinner. Smell is emanating from drains in our bathrooms. Suspect that someone locally has poured toxic chemicals down the drain or sewer system.

Hi, thanks for following up (5 months from original notification - realizing that there’s a lot of work going on locally this month below street level).
Your response is unclear; “There was distinct smell of any chemical in sewer system.” Does that mean there WAS a distinct scent, or that there WAS NOT a distinct scent? Thanks for clarifying.

There was a distinct odor detected at each inspection that the JCMUA performed.
When complaints came across to the JCMUA of such chemical smells the JCMUA was able to detect the location of where it was entering into the sewer by televising the sewer and noticing the sheen on top of the water. In every case we discovered that it was an underground oil tank that was leaking.
Everytime the JCMUA televised the sewer there was no indication where the source was coming from and the smell was detected several blocks north of your location
