Or the City could admit that the two way bike lane in this part of Brattle was an ill conceived project, remove the two way, enforce the one way, and provide signage so bicyclists are aware of the same safe traffic pattern used by other vehicles.

The Brattle Street bike lane makes my commute safer and more comfortable and I'm really glad it's there. It's the only safe way to approach Harvard Square from the west on a bike. The logistical issues at the end points of the bike lane aren't hard to fix and certainly don't negate the efficacy and safety of the whole bike lane.

Agree wholeheartedly with Ryan Frazer! I use this bike lank every day, and it has made me feel much safer. The end points can be easily addressed with markings or signage without changing the current state of the bike lane itself.

Why not extend the bike lane markings (and directional arrows) through the intersection with dashed lines, as is done in any other place where potential conflicts exist? Dashed markings could be added alongside the bike lane extension to guide traffic from the one-way portion of Brattle to the two-way portion. Coming from the two-way section, this would hopefully also indicate a lane shift in the opposite direction, which reinforces the existing do-not-enter sign. The do-not-enter could also be clarified with a left-turn-only sign, as that appears to be the only legal movement.

It should be straightforward to clarify these movements.

We are looking at the nearby street grid to see if there are any alternative routes that could make access to the cycle track more user friendly.

I respect the bicyclists' POV. However, the 2 way bikeway made Brattle St a challenge for motor vehicles, as well as pedestrians, at this spot and several others: reduced visibility, lack of clarity for who has priority and where, etc. I would appreciate the City taking a more wholesome view and reconsider what can be improved on this section of Brattle, to make it safer for all: pedestrians, bicycles, as well as cars.

To address this issue, we have started the implementation of a contra-flow bike lane on James St to connect Mason St to Brattle St without the back-tracking left turn at Mason/Brattle. We will also be adding green markings in this vicinity to bring more awareness to potential conflict points and clarify wayfinding. Shared lane markings were recently installed on Berkeley St and Phillips Pl, the first step in creating an eventual low speed, low volume route from Garden St to the Brattle St facility. We anticipate this work to be completed before the end of October.

A contra-flow bike lane has been installed on James St to provide better access to the facility from Mason St. We have also installed shared lane markings on Berkeley St and Phillips Pl to create a marked route from Garden St towards Brattle St and Harvard Sq. Wayfinding signage will be installed within the coming months.
