Description

My family has lived in Rockridge since the 60's and we never had an issue walking in our neighborhood, specifically, crossing the street at the intersections because we had four way stop signs. Since the installation of the unsightly round-abouts, I won't even let my 14 year old walk to her dance classes two blocks away because of the danger the City has placed at the intersections by removing the stop signs. We have been cutoff by cars who won't bother to stop because they demand their right-of-way because of no stop sign. My daughter has told me numerous times that cars are not yielding while she is in the crosswalk and she is waiting for it to clear to cross. I've almost been hit and have almost hit vehicles when I'm moving through the round-about while driving. From my observation as a pedestrian and as a driver in my neighborhood, the vehicles are racing to get across the intersection "me first me first" even the vehicles who have the stop sign on Hudson. This is an accident waiting to happen and I pray a pedestrian is never hit. Taking out the stop signs on Shafter enabled the drivers commuting on highway 24 an even better commute by getting off the freeway and jumping back on at Broadway. They no longer have the stop signs slowing them down. I don't understand the reasoning behind removing the stop signs on Shafter and installing round-abouts that are too large for our neighborhood intersections. It just made no sense. I suggest removing the ugly round-abouts and replacing the stop signs. Let's avoid the City being sued because of poor visibility at these intersections because of its installation of the round-abouts and, more importantly, someone getting injured. The money the City spent installing the round-abouts could have been spent on filling the potholes on Shafter up by 40th.
