I think RFID has problems with range, doesn't it? I think without an investment in the 10s of thousands you are looking at 50 feet. Maybe a GPS/LoJack is the way to go? I know you can buy a GPS transponder for roughly 150, plus the service charge.

the only problem is that a criminal may be smart enough to look for it (especially if we post about it in SCF). It would have to be integrated with the overall sign in some way.

I think a camera is probably the cheapest/best way of catching the theft of the signs.

I'm not sure of the exact cost-model, but if there's a substantial cost for the electronic monitoring, it might be more cost-effective to use that money to simply buy more signs. Just a thought...

There is a camera at the Trumbull / Orange intersection. I wonder how far East on Trumbull St. the camera can see, and if there is a record of what the camera is viewing?

There should be two signs here.

These signs seem to disappear from intersections all around town. Several weeks ago, on my regular evening walk, I saw one of these signs in the yard of a house on Nicoll St. (I didn't have my camera with me, so no photographic proof). I went back, the next day to ask the homeowner about the sign, but the sign was gone...
Some of the signs get run over and destroyed, but the city should have more of these signs, in reserve, to immediately replace the signs that are stolen or destroyed.
