They need to get rid of these bike lanes

Double parking has been a problem on this stretch of Bergen Ave. for years, pre-dating the bike lanes. Yes, I hate the bike lanes, too -- because now bike riders more than ever flaut the law and create dangerous situations for everyone. The bike lanes make them feel even more entitled. But they are not the cause of the double-parking. Police disinterest in enforcing parking / driving rules are the cause of the double parking.

MKM- what you perceive as entitlement is often bicyclists trying to survive in a hostile environment. Have you ever rode a bike in JC?

I have no problem with bike riders who obey the law and ride safely. What about the people who dodge lanes, ride down the line between lanes, ride on the widewalk, run stop signs and lights, and ride against traffic, just to name a few of the more common infractions?
I have ridden a bike in very congested areas, not Jersey City. I enjoy bike riding. I don't enjoy bike riders in Jersey City who think they can do anything they please.

MKM- thanks for the response. Studies have shown that bike riders break the law less than car drivers, which is worrisome because the stakes are so much higher when car drivers break the law. I would say that running stop signs and lights is done at the rider's peril, and further, that these laws are designed for cars. If we want to treat bikes like cars, then we'd have to be ok with bikes riding the down the center of the street at 12mph, which legally you can do, but it doesn't quite make for the best system.
I bike a lot in JC and I'll admit that I ride thru stop signs and red lights. I do it only when it's safe and I'd agree to stop at stop signs if drivers would do the same.
Finally, better infrastructure -- like these new bike lanes -- will give bikers an accepted place to be, which will engender better behavior.

For the record, I don’t think this is a biker issue; I think there’s room cars and bikes on Bergen between Sip and Montgomery. My issue is the lack of enforcement. Yes, double-parked cars existed before the new road layout; however, we had an extra legal lane to get around them. Now, it only takes one double-parked car to back up traffic. Since when did the use of caution lights become an excuse for breaking the law? We need aggressive enforcement and ticketing to control traffic. Violators of the law are forcing me to break laws by veering into the middle turn lanes to pass them. Buses and other motorists turning right onto Montgomery from Bergen back up traffic because the turn lane is. Wing used for parking. We have a mess! The answer is enforcement, not removing bike lanes!

I don't think Bergen Ave. is an appropriate place for bike lanes. It's too heavily trafficked and not wide enough. Bike lanes should be confined to secondary roads that don't have as much traffic. That would be safer for everyone.

I agree with Rick that enforcement could solve a lot of the issues.
To MKM, which roads in JC don't have as much traffic? Most bicyclists just want a safe North-South route.

This will be an on-going process or the Traffic Division to coordinate with the Municipal Council and the administration to monitor issues, make design adjustments, and improve enforcement.

Jennifer C. I’m the meantime nothing is being done to enforce the new traffic pattern. This was taken today. Is it a turn lane or not? Why can’t we get enforcement? Was that afterthought? Leave the mayor’s bike lanes, but please provide enforcement!

Remove the bike lanes and open up the road for traffic , no one will ride a bike in winter there’s more cars then bikes

I think this is the wrong place for a bike lane, too. They should be on parallel streets, such as Jones and Tuers, most parts of Summit, that don't have as much traffic. But there is still the problem of cars parking in the turning lane on Bergen Ave. That's been exacerbated by the bike lane narrowing the road. It's patently unfair to make this change and provide no enforcement of cars blocking legitimate traffic.

Folks, I don’t get the impression that Jersey City officials are listening to us! They just pass the buck like Jennifer C did until people give up. Very disappointing to see that decisions are made more for padding the mayor’s political resume than the best interests of his constituents.
