Description
I’d like to make a complaint about the dogs off leash in Edgerton Park.
The sign on the way into the park specifically states dogs are to be kept on leash, however, once you around the bend get to that first big hill on your way in, dogs are always running off leash.
On 1/24/21 (mid afternoon), my seven- year- old and his friend were chased by a large dog that came out of nowhere- no owner in site. They were terrified. After I managed to wrangle the dog I must’ve shouted “ who’s dog is this?” several times before the owner leisurely walked over to claim his animal. No apology and a “no harm, no foul” attitude. This is not the first time. I’m tired of these dogs beings off leash and even more tired of their lackadaisical owners who could care less about where their animals go and what they do. Edgerton is not a dog park. And the thing they don’t seem to realize is that every time that happens, they’ve gotten lucky- should the situation have gone awry, and someone was injured, the outcome would’ve been bad for everyone involved. So, for the sake of all, I would like to see the situation rectified ASAP.
Best,
Erika Lake-Thomas

I say to the woman who wrote the post GOOD LUCK ! This has never been rectified since I have walked my leashed dogs there for 20 years. The Parks and Rec don't care ..Ive put in many calls and all one gets is excuses. A woman (on the board of Edgerton) very involved with the park tried very hard to rectify the situation for two years and finally gave up.

The above commenter claims that the dog owners are "among the most responsible ... people who use the park each day" yet the same "responsible" dog owners can not be bothered to abide by the law, which says that dogs must be on-leash.
Yes, off-leash dogs are an issue, not only in Edgerton but also in East Rock Park. The Edgerton problem has gotten noticeably worse in recent months, with frequent large gatherings of more than ten dogs at a time.
Yes, there has been an issue of an off-leash dog attacking and injuring a person in recent memory. It was posted here on See Click Fix.
Off-leash hours at Edgerton would be a step in the right direction and would allow everyone to be aware of what they are walking into. Until then, please abide by the law and leash your dogs.

Coco , It needs to be investigated here why your comment was blocked. As was mine... no reason for either to be blocked. Thank you for posting ! And I will not put mine back up but write a new one, much longer one. XYZ seems to know the ins and outs of negotiating these posts... Perhaps he knows how an unauthorized person can block a post ???

You remarked my post that stated, "The dog owners create a presents in this park, and help keep out a bad element. Should they stop going you do not who they may be replaced with",
was a threat. This is as much of a threat as someone saying if do not shovel your sidewalk someone my trip and fall. A threat would be a posted that read if dogs are not allowed to be off leash I personally will let a lion loose in the park.

XYZ, I don't know who it was. There was a posting a while back about someone being bitten and about subsequent tickets being given out for off-leash dogs at Edgerton. If I remember correctly, the posting stated that the police department enforced the leash law for only a day or two after the incident. The entry may have been deleted in the SeeClickFix purge.
In any case, it is only a matter of time before it happens again. I have personal experience with this, having been bitten by a friendly dog (not in New Haven) through no fault of my own.
Edgerton is a large enough space that real harm could come to someone before the "responsible" owner of the off-leash dog arrived at the scene of an incident. Especially now, when people don't have many safe places to go because of Covid, isn't it time that dog owners respected the law and made the parks safer for other people, especially children?
