For the whole two miles east from the Holland Tunnel all the way past Chrystie Street, traffic is three cars wide and the drivers block each grid throughout weekends, and THEY HONK CONTINUOUSLY.
Rarely traffic cops are assigned to direct the flow, though cops are sometimes observing cell phone use of drivers, they usually stay in the shade in a group of 4, or inside their cars parked on the sidestreet. The honking noise is horrible. There are DOT signs posted that there is a '$350 FINE FOR HONKING' , at Broadway and Broome, and two 'NO HONKING SIGNS" up Lafayette and Prince near the Fire Department, and why is a 'NO HONKING $350 FINE' sign posted on Thompson Street (West of West Broadway) a one-lane North-South street?! WHY don't they enforce the no honking and get those good fines?

The drivers still honk for LONG periods and the noise caries many blocks, destroying all peace. This is now January 2012. and the noise is very bad and continuous most days.

January 30, 2012, still a huge problem - the loudness of the noise a car horn makes. it reverberates so loud that it disturbs the peace in a nasty way even if it is blocks away. Many are just 7 stories down, but that is not far enough away to diminish the noise. it its horrible.

Feb 27, 2012, still as bad as ever. Sometimes one vehicle honks 18 times in a row, or there is a chorus of different ones . the traffic is bad, but the traffic pattern is worse: caused by the use of these residential streets for interstate traffic. The one way toll on the Verrazano Narrows Bridge means drivers cross lower Manhattan to avoid it on their way to Jew Jersey, as there is also no toll for exiting Manhattan. Maybe one of those factors should change?

11 March 2012 not 'fixed', the drivers were heard at 5:30 AM yesterday, as they avidly jockeyed for better position. They honk all day intermittently and long, enough to jar the nerves of all within earshot. Wonder how long this would go on in their residential neighborhoods. Under NYC noise code 10 minutes of a dog barking is considered an infraction. These guys honk all afternoon, and yet they gain nothing.

25 march 2012, still miserably aggravating noise form honking. Two days ago, though, there were three traffic police handing out tickets as fast as they could write them to drivers blocking the grid at BROADWAY and at MERCER on Broome. NOT at Lafayette, Cleveland Place or any cross street east.

ALSO, they block the CROSSWALKS all the time, making it impossible to cross the street for pedestrians. Sure, one could go into the traffic lane, but the drivers also want to move, and jeopardize my safety just trying to cross the street on the way home with groceries.

Sunday morning, 8:30 am, there the cars are, honking and blaring, and the noise intrudes to my 7th story place, where 50 feet down the loft, I hear them, loud. What are they gaining? I know what I lose: peace on an early morning. No this had not been fixed, not even addressed. The drivers are completely impatient, and it is not right they are able to get away with this venting at local residents' cost. photo is April 6th.

Sept 2012 they still block the grid and honk. no perceptible alteration in the noise level. the rare cop assigned occasionally takes the job seriously and does something; mostly they stand in the shade and do nothing, talk amongst themselves. what to do?

October 2012, all Friday afternoon there those drivers were: honking. How can anyone imagine this is 'colcluded' - maybe if thy don't pay attention to the problem?
