Description

With the closing of Central Ave for the Central Patio, traffic on Whalley Ave is backing up through the intersection of Whalley & Central at nearly every signal loop. We cross this street every morning and afternoon to get to Westville Community Nursery School (1 block away on Tour Ave) and last week and this week, preschoolers and their parents have gotten stuck between cars in traffic as they try to cross at the crosswalk between cars that have blocked the intersection. The fact that westbound and eastbound traffic has a green light at different times makes the intersection all the more confusing for everyone -- pedestrians included.
Today, five cars in succession headed west ran the red light - including a City bus. I understand the vehicular confusion -- it doesn't feel like there should be a traffic light there anymore given that there is no real intersection. But this is now a dangerous place to cross. Can the City's traffic folks look at this and make a change? Either eliminate the crosswalks entirely and take down that signal or something to make it MUCH clearer that there is a pedestrian path there?
