Enforcing bike lanes when there are no bicycles makes about as much sense an setting red light times for imaginary pedestrians at every freaking intersection so cars sit wasting gas and pumping fumes.

The end result will be the bike lanes and traffic signals being ignored.

Captante, your line of reasoning is severely outdated and laughable. The reason you don't see many bikes in some bike lanes is because drivers (probably such as yourself) routinely block them selfishly with their cars, so people riding bikes tend to avoid them. If you think enforcing bike lane obstructions is not important, then we thank you for your generous support of separated and protected bike lanes that don't require enforcement. Also, if you don't like pedestrians getting automatic walk signals just like car drivers who have always gotten automatic green lights, you're free to turn off your car since you're the one "wasting gas and pumping fumes."

I have noticed an increase of parking and student drop-off on W. Rock as a result of the Edgewood changes. I wish planning for Edgewood School student drop off could have been focused to occur on the school property rather than making it harder for parents to use the nearby residential areas. A parent that uses the front of my house for their drop off will force children to cross Edgewood and W Rock. This is not a a safety improvement for the children.

Summary: give the parents a drop off lane on the school property so the children can go directly into the school. With the existing space around the school a drop off lave could have been incorporated with minimal effect to playground and parking.

Adam .... I am a daily bicycle rider/commuter with a bike pass from Metro North to prove it. Crazy me I'd prefer to see my tax dollars spent on solutions that WORK as opposed to stuff that "feels good".

I realize addressing the actual issue at hand can be a challenge for some folks though... carry on.

5 minute traffic signals are NOT the answer any more then cutting local streets down to one tiny lane in order to cater to a dozen people on bicycles is.

Enforcing SPEED LIMITS with visible patrol units for one example would do one heck of a lot more to make the neighborhood safer.

Cap...there's no such thing as a "5 minute traffic signal." Hyperbolic exaggeration does not help your argument. And roads are public spaces. It's much better when they work for everyone and not just those in cars. Roads used to be places for everyone to exist safely until people a century ago decided to cater to a dozen people in cars and look how that snowballed into our current reality, with arrogant car drivers thinking they own every road and need multiple wide lanes.

Automobile drivers PAY for the road.... that is reality.

I'd love to see a more bike/pedestrian-friendly New Haven but poor planning and lame design (par usual) is not getting it done. The way that school bike lane was laid out will not work out long term and the money spent on it will have been wasted... but I guess that's just fine by you hmm?

Yes I ride nearly every day. And you're wrong - EVERYONE pays for the road, regardless of transportation mode. Please educate yourself on how roads are funded. Drivers pay excess fees because cars take up a massive amount of room, pollute our air, damage the roads, and are capable of destruction and death. The school bike lane is just paint and barely cost anything more since the road was getting repaved and restriped anyways. And you people wonder why most folks don't want to get involved...because the original issue brought up in this post has now been smothered by your personal ramblings and grievances.

Whomever designed that bike zone by Edgewood school is borderline incompetent.

Unfortunately, school safety took a back seat to the bike lanes when this project was planned. 3 months into the project and the city has yet to update the school signs
