Several bike thefts in the past few months on this street- all involving dismantling of street signs that the bikes were locked to. Police report made in at least two incedences, but still an issue.

This is what we did on Upper State Street and the city now has a mechanism in place for approvals of new bike rack locations.

At corner of Mansfield and Compton, one of the signs that was removed is still gone. The base of the sign is still sticking out from the side of the sidewalk, and represents a tripping hazard. Exposed sharp pieces of metal are never a good thing to have sticking out of the ground. Can this be fixed?
Also, bike racks are still needed here. Since most of the properties are Yale owned, perhaps the University should donate the racks.

Guys are unbolting the parking / street sweeping signs to steal your bikes, sometimes with the u-lock attached and are literally scraping your wheels bro.
They throw them in their pick-up and take the load of metal to the junkyard.
Probably take the more valuable ones to the flea market or pawn ,but there is no risk in just scrapping them

The main challenge with adding city bike racks on Mansfield St is that it is hard to find sufficiently large paved areas within the public right-of-way. There might be some space between the sidewalk and the curb on the east side of the street at Compton St. It would definitely be best to contact the property owner before installing the racks in case they need the extra pavement for some reason.
A few of us from the city transportation will try knocking on the door sometime in the next couple of days, but if anyone out there knows the people who own and/or live at the house on the east side of Mansfield across from Compton that has the extra-wide paved area between the sidewalk an the curb, let me know. You can reach me at brian.ttp@gmail.com
Thanks!
