Issue acknowledged - assigning to Traffic Division.

Hi and thanks for posting this issue.. I've been impacted by this as well... both as a pedestrian and motorist, and the situation is hazardous.

Traffic Division reports that the city doesn't (yet) have signal control software that can use the information from smart sensors which "see" pedestrians to vary the pedestrian signal time as is done with vehicle signals. Once it does that is how the pedestrian-traffic problem at this busy intersection will successfully be managed - this issue is closed.

You haven't addressed the issue or commented on the proposed solution: make ALL the lights red for 20-30 seconds, then all the crosswalks 'walk'. Pedestrians can cross freely. Then all crosswalks get the 'red hand' and the cars can flow again. This is an EASY solution. I have brought it up before with the city and they have deflected. Please make the change.

Hi, I live on Lake Street and want this issue addressed also. Especially, during times of heaving pedestrian traffic to or from the Waterfront, it is nearly impossible to get up College Street to Battery Street specifically due to the back up cars **not being able to get through the pedestrian traffic crossing Battery Street**. The original poster is completely correct, MAYBE only one or two cars can get through each east-west green-light cycle and that may involve having to very closely dodge pedestrians still crossing Battery Street... There is going to be an accident here eventually.

All of my requests were just re categorized to 'long term projects', meaning DPW doesn't want to deal with them, or me. This system is flawed. I'm moving on.

I live 2 blocks up on College.. and always need to think of how busy the time of day before I drive that way... usually I reroute over the Church Street Pedestrian area via Bank Street because it's much less perilous.... what is wrong with this picture?? I agree with Green Mountain.. are we waiting for a fatality before the problem is addressed?

Powereli, projects are being recategorized because of the 10 year capital plan the city is initiating. If you are unhappy I suggest you go to a Public Works Commission meeting next month.

I got stuck in a car here last week through 2 light cycles behind other cars waiting for the long line of pedestrians to clear the crosswalk a I ws trying to turn north onto Battery from College westbound . We were just three cars on this side of the intersection, but cars were lined up all the way down to Lake St. across Battery eastbound on College waiting for a car to be able to turn north on Battery. I think this needs to be prioritized for both pedestrian safety and needless idling.

Adam, keep your comments to yourself if you don't have anything productive to say. Do you think I haven't been to a Commission meeting? I've been on City Commissions.. the only place real change happens is with the Council, the Mayor, and the Department Heads. The voters and taxpayers have no voice. . This intersection is a disaster and the City has shelved the issue, refusing to admit it's a problem. It could be solved with a simple light/crosswalk re-program. I have spoken to the City's 'traffic engineer' and he simply disagrees that the intersection has any problem at all. Issue closed. SeeClickFix is a sham.. a way for the City to say they are listening or transparent, but now they don't have to take any phone calls or talk to any taxpayers.. just submit everything online, behind a screen like everything else in our world now. Calling BS on this whole system.

We will continue to look at improvements to this intersection. I am hopeful that the pedestrian sensing technology will become more accurate and affordable for a future install here so that we can dynamically have the signal respond to the condition. Per Assistant Director Traffic

Would it make sense to obliterate the markings on the northern Battery St. crosswalk, post a simple barrier at each end of it with signage directing pedestrians across College St. so as to only cross Battery St. on the southern crosswalk? This could allow street traffic to flow straight through the intersection and also allow north-turning vehicles on College to advance as permitted during red-light phases. Traffic destined for the Main/Battery intersection has the option of using the southern leg of Lake St. (to the west of/"behind" Burlington Bay Market and April Cornell) in order to avoid pedestrians crossing that southern crosswalk at Battery/College.
