every snowstorm for the past 5 years has had a ban on parking on one side of the street. The problem has been that so many folks ignore the ban each storm and there are only so many tow trucks. So just like parking at an expired meter, you got lucky for a while but luck ran out this time.

I wished they had towed the three cars on the east side of Foster Street between Cottage and Canner Streets. With those three cars buried in snow Foster Street cannot be plowed to the curb. The Yale Orange Line shuttle usually runs on Foster but if the street is not plowed it is difficult for the bus to get down the street and no room for oncoming traffic. It seems like Foster Street should be a high priority for snow removal given the shuttle route.

I feel very badly for you since you were unaware of the ban, but I have to remind everyone that since Toni Harp has been in office, the odd-side residential bans have been publicized very clearly through SeeClickFix, and the many other ways the city allows people to sign up for alerts through text and email. The blue warning lights were also flashing at intersections, and my phone has been buzzing with blizzard warnings since Friday.

Over in Dixwell, the plowing is generally much better than it has been in the past 25 years because of these bans, and the only thing that made them work was that the city started to ticket or tow. Unfortunately, there are still serious problems, like sometimes lax enforcement (there was no ticketing over the past 3 storms on our streets of Mansfield, Compton, Tilton, Woodland).

The city has also never addressed the need for a follow-up ban to switch sides, and plow the EVEN side of the street. In a season with a lot of snow, eventually there are so many piles of snow on the even side, that people have a very hard time parking there when there is an odd-side ban.

Sometimes individual situations arise that do seem unfair to us. Two years ago, after a storm ended, our street was completely plowed and cleaned, right up to the curb, and several of us walked to the school parking lots and put our cars back on the street, and we got fined $100, because officially the ban had not been lifted. But we sucked it up, because we know that we were legally in the wrong, even if we were thought we were still acting responsibly, and being considerate of our neighbors.

So I completely support the city ticketing and towing, and I hope they will be more consistent about it. Rules that help everybody are only effective with enforcement.

I have had my cars towed for street sweeping in the past and it was expensive and inconvenient. Unfortunately, for snow removal, the streets need to be clear of cars before they get buried in snow. Towing may be the only way to clear all of the cars. It looks like Willow Street was cleared of cars for a long stretch, which has not happened in recent years. Hopefully Willow Street will get plowed from curb to curb.

Here on Bishop Street, it looks like most residents cooperated with the ban (yay!).The plows haven't come remotely close to the even-side curb, though, making the whole thing seem rather pointless - I do hope they plan on doing more passes as they day progresses.

As others have said, there have been parking bans on the odd side of the street in snow emergencies for years. If this user is savvy enough to complain about being towed on this web site, they should easily be able to follow the link above to register to receive texts and phone calls in emergencies. It's encouraging that the city is finally enforcing parking bans. However, I agree that there needs to be a plan for plowing the other side of the street if these densely populated neighborhoods are going to be manageable during heavy snowfalls.

Nash St. is a ONE way street that is NOT an emergency route and only needs the middle lane to travel down. It's now 2 DAYS later and you tell me that towing cars on the odd side of the street was for a reason besides screwing residents and making the city money. This is VERY disappointing.
