There has always been a problem with speeding/racing on Lake Street in the warmer months... usually packs of motorcycles with exhaust so loud it rattles the windows and nearly blows out the eardrums of the residents who live on this street. And it often happens later at night after most of the pedestrians have cleared out and when there is no police presence. The amount of all hours traffic down here has definitely increased with the Lake Street Extension and new skatepark. Some speed humps in the vicinity of 200-216 Lake Street to slow people down would be helpful.

haha you'd think but no. Coincidentally I almost hit a bicyclist yesterday who unexpectedly swerved into the left lane to avoid the minefield of potholes in the right lane. The City keeps filling the potholes with cold pack and literally every time it rains it all washes out and the potholes end up bigger than before..

Umm... by the time I call the police (and they respond) the motorcycles and exhaust-tuned Honda Civics blowing by my living room window at 60mph will be long gone. The problem needs a preventative solution.

I contacted Deputy Chief Burke who assigned it to the Lieutenant in charge of that district of the City. His name is Lieutenant Jon Young.

If you do not want to call the police department to let them know when this is happening I would urge you to contact lieutenant Young for assistance. His e-mail is JYoung@bpdvt.org

I believe he can provide you with proactive assistance you are looking for. I cannot.

DPW does not conduct traffic monitoring/calming with an anonymous source. I recommend you contact the Customer Service supervisor Valarie Ducharme at vducharme@burlingtonvt.gov to ask about the traffic study in preparation for traffic calming. She can guide you through the request process.

Currently, traffic calming in Burlington is initiated by residents. At least 1/3 of the affected street or neighborhood needs to be interested in traffic calming, which is demonstrated through a neighborhood petition. Once a petition is received, it enters the project queue. Traffic calming requests are popular and take time to complete. The DPW manages an average of 4 traffic calming projects at any one time and new projects are advanced in the order they are received. The process generally takes a minimum of 2 years and up to 4 years to complete, while the City balances staff to manage projects and budgets to install traffic calming. A petition template is available on our website:

Please be advised that this program is currently being updated, but a neighborhood petition is still the best way to ensure we consider your request under the updated program.

Thank you for inquiring about traffic calming. We have requested traffic and crash data to help us determine the best options moving forward on Lake Street. For an overview of the process, please visit https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/dpw/TrafficCalming

We'll follow up with more information once we've completed our review of traffic and crash data, which will occur during this coming winter. The traffic calming program is very popular and there is a queue of streets ahead of this request, but we will use the winter months to develop any improvement plans for the coming year.
