Temescal Creek park is covered in Foxtails. Pulling them is the only option and they need to be removed in the next day or two. Simply cutting them will allow them to blow all over the neighborhood spreading more grown in the area and endangering our pets outside the park. These are a dog owner's nightmare. This is a health and safety issue, not a “pretty park issue”.
Foxtails torpedo-shaped awns are like bullets and can penetrate any part of a dog’s body. The awns most commonly lodge in a dog’s nose, ears, underbelly, rear end and paws. Long-haired dogs are particularly susceptible, as the barbed foxtail stays attached to the dog’s long fur and are difficult to spot. Foxtails can become lodged in between toes, in nostrils or in ear canals. Wherever the foxtail is located, once it’s through the skin of a dog it should be examined by a vet in order to make sure the entire awn is removed. That’s because once a foxtail awn begins traveling through your dog, they do not break down, but will travel through tissue and organs. http://www.reshareworthy.com/foxtail-grass-can-kill-your-dogs/

And it was $1500 of veterinary surgery and medications to heal this injury. Foxtails are extremely dangerous to animals: they can enter like barbed wire but not come out. They can go into the dog's organs through eyes, ears, mouth, anus, nose, etc.
We want nothing silly thing keep the fox tails cleaned up at the park you're around.
With climate change the season for foxtails has greatly extended,: it used to be May to October, it is now March through November/December.
Thank you

Long-distance dispersal of foxtail chess is accomplished by seeds that lodge in animal fur and in loosely woven clothing. Short-distance dispersal is aided by wind, which blows seeds along the ground until they settle in eddies behind shrubs or rocks or in depressions in the ground.Altered patterns of wildfire, microhabitat characteristics, and nutrient cycling caused by foxtail chess and competition for soil nutrients and light negatively affect native annual plant populations and revegetated plants (D’Antonio and Vitousek 1992). Foxtail chess is highly flammable and promotes wildfires in desert plant communities where fires historically have been infrequent
