I agree. The city has certainly changed its position on sidewalk space. Years ago a few chairs on the sidewalk were not allowed no permanent structures narrow up the sidewalk so two people can barely pass in busy business districts
Outdoor seating is nice and adds to the community but it has gotten out of hand.
Same situation near Alameda theater where there is a ton of foot traffic.

I have asked to council to direct code enforcement to make ADA issues a priority.

I too must ask the City to please not consider this a "closed" issue. You can easily see by visual inspection that the space shown is too narrow for 2 wheelchairs to pass each other [or alternatively a wheelchair & baby stroller]. These access situations exist all over town and do not seem to be changing for the better. Even the Mastick Senior Center is full of disabled access barriers which have been "noted" and commented on in city meetings, but years have passed without them ever being addressed. The City of Alameda granted the encroachment and also placed the boarding area for the casual carpool nearby. It really is more of an access issue than a code enforcement one, though the benches and low hanging plants may involve code enforcement. The city needs to look at this corner and try to solve some of the problems that it created. This really is more of a pedestrian/transportation issue than a code enforcement one and whoever monitors SeeClickFix should assign it appropriately. It may well be possible to solve the problem my moving some of the clutter in the area to a different location. I am sure that there is a way to solve the problems if the will exists to do so.

The City issued an encroachment permit for this sidewalk café in 2010. The existing configuration of the café is in keeping with the approved permit.

How does The City know that its encroachment criteria are not in conflict with The Americans with Disabilities Act? Please cite the legal basis for this alleged "approved encroachment" {Municode?], and the date that the parameters for such encroachment went into effect. Thank you.

The area is also used by the casual carpool and that takes up most of the remaining sidewalk.
