UDOT Region 2 assigned this issue to Heidi - UDOT Region 2 Operations

This is so frustrating. The wait time at the light traveling west at this intersection is considerably long but the wait is compounded when north bound cars block the intersection. A sign reminding motorists to not block the intersection is a great idea!

I completely agree. The E-W light is short at this intersection, and the cars heading north towards the University of Utah and downtown are always blocking the intersection during rush hour. The opposite happens all along southbound Foothill during the afternoon rush hour.

I agree this is not only frustrating but also dangerous. The light heading east to west is so short that even one or two cars heading north blocking the intersection make it impossible to get through the light. Cars heading east to west could sit there through 4 or 5 lights (or more depending on how aggressive drivers heading north are) before they can get through. Can police start issuing tickets if a driver is in the middle of the intersection when the light changes and block traffic?? Something needs to be done!!!

A period of concentrated enforcement at this light should both encourage compliance and generate needed revenue for civic expenses (i.e., it pays for itself). Where are red light cameras when you need them?

Just Monday and Tuesday I sat through 3 lights while Northbound traffic covered the intersection while the had a red light. I suggest that a police presence and ticketing for a week would probably help more than a sign.

I run into this exact same problem every single morning. When headed E-W usually only 2 cars make it through the light because the wait is so long for the cars to move that are sitting in the middle of the intersection when they shouldn’t be there.

I experience the same issue at the light at Foothill and 1700 S., both at AM and PM rush hour. In fact, I believe it is more dangerous in the late afternoon, as drivers speed to make it through the yellow light, only to screech to a halt and block the intersection. I believe people are even more motivated to get home than get to work in the AM.

I'm another who faces this issue every morning... Northbound Foothill drivers pull right up behind gridlocked traffic in the 1300 S & Foothill intersection, blocking east- and westbound traffic on 1300 South. The timing of the lights is typically 1m45s passage for Foothill vehicles and about 15 *SECONDS* for 1300 South vehicles. So those on 1300 South often don't get though the light. It's becoming downright dangerous as people start driving very aggressively. A sign may help, but I agree with many others here that one week of police presence and ticketing of Foothill drivers for blocking the intersection would do wonders.

Please help us with this intersection problem. Drivers northbound on Foothill Blvd. in the morning completely disregard the light and are "caught in the box".
Posting a sign and then enforcing would be quickly solve this issue.

I agree entirely that this needs to be fixed. The same thing happens on a very regular basis at the intersection of Foothill and 2300 East in the mornings. Thank you for looking into it, UDOT!

This issue is compounded by the extremely short green light time for westbound traffic on 2300 east. The light eastbound is shorter than westbound. If more than 4 cars back, you are likely not to get through the intersection even when it is not blocked. Please add 30 seconds to the green eastbound light!!!

I agree about the short green light time for crossing Foothill on 2300 East - in both directions!!

Blocked intersections during rush hour are not only an issue at 1300 South, but also at 2300 East (Foothill Village area). Short green lights for the cross streets do not help the situation.

I agree that this issue needs to be addressed. The short light time needs to be fixed to give drivers more time going East and West to get through the light, especially those turning onto Foothill.

Please add time to the green light for East/West traffic on 1300 S at Foothill. The same can be said to the 2300 E intersection on Foothill. The light going south to Foothill from 2300 E is much worse than 1300 S.

Thank you for taking the time to contact UDOT with your concerns and suggestions about Foothill Drive at the intersections of 1300 South and 2300 South. I will be bringing this topic up at our next weekly Traffic Engineers meeting to see what can be done about these intersections from the UDOT side regarding signal timing and "Do Not Block Intersection" signs. Also please feel free to contact the local police department for this area if you would like more police presence and enforcement of the signals. Sometimes a lack of police enforcement is a big part of the problem on the roadways that we own.

there needs to be a sign showing a "merge to one lane" on Foothill Dr. just south the 2300 East intersection in the southbound lane. Dangerous and frequent honking because people aren't aware of this until it is too late

Work Order 2018-25 has been put in with the UDOT Sign Crew to install "Do Not Block Intersection" signs on the signal mast-arms for the NB and SB directions on Foothill Drive at 1300 South. Contacting the local police department to enforce these signs is what is needed if these signs do not automatically stop the issue that you are seeing with NB and SB traffic blocking passage for EB and WB traffic.

We are not going to install "Do Not Block Intersection" signs at 1700 South or 2300 East at this time as we do not want to set a precedent of having to install these signs at every intersection when it is already written in State Law that vehicles are not to be blocking intersections. Contacting the local police department to enforce this existing law is what is needed.

The following intersections on Foothill Drive will receive signal timing updates to optimize the flow: 1300 South (East to West), 1700 South (East to West), and 2300 East (North to South).

Carolyn - There should already be a sign that indicates that 3 lanes merge down to 2 lanes on SB Foothill Drive just south of the 2300 East intersection. It is on the right hand side of Foothill just after the driveway to enter Washington Federal. It is the diamond shaped sign that is yellow with black bars that indicate that a lane ends. If this sign is knocked down or no longer there please reply to this and we will get it reinstalled.
