I am reaching out about making this intersection safer for families and pedestrians who cross it at least 4 times a day. This intersection is a direct route to Maya Lin Elementary School. I spoke to City planning and Cal Trans about my concerns 2-3 years ago, and we still fear for our lives 4 times a day when crossing to school. Yesterday, my son had to drop his bike while walking with it in the middle of the street to avoid being hit by a vehicle.
Can this crosswalk be provided with the same type of pedestrian signs as all the other schools along Highway 61 before this project? All the schools along this route have either a traffic light to cross, or visible pedestrian signage and/or lights. This direct route to a school, crossing a main thoroughfare, is the only school without safe passage. For a family who lives on the south side of Central Ave, they would need to either walk as far as Sherman St, or 8th St to cross safely at a light.

In April 2021, the City Council approved final concepts for major safety improvements on Central Ave from Sherman to Main, including traffic calming measures, safer pedestrian crossings, roundabouts, and bicycle facilities. The intersection of 9th and Central is slated to have raised crosswalks with high visibility striping, striped bulb-outs, bike lanes on Central, and bike boxes on ninth. Construction is scheduled for 2023.
