i have been a customer for over two years, and the demand has definitely risen. often, i cannot get a car the day of or a day or two before an errand i need to run.
new haven would hugely benefit from more cars available across the city.
Have these cars been moved, or are they just always taken? The spaces are cordoned off because the entire lot is being used for food carts (according to the vendors, for the next 3 weeks).
The cars have not been moved. They are parked right there in their usual spots when not taken, but they seem to be taken most of the time. The food carts are occupying only one end of the parking lot.
I'm sure that zipcar can determine how many people are unable to reserve a car (because all requests go through their website), and they will add cars when demand warrants it. That does not necessarily mean that they will spend $15-20,000 on a new car when supply falls a few hours (@ $8-10/hour) short of peak/weekend demand for a particular location. There are 3 cars in the Ingalls Rink lot the vast majority of the time on weekdays, and several more in the Whitney lot.
New cars have been added at 360 State Street, and I think more will be added at Union Station in the near future. That's good news.
More cars are still needed around East Rock/Prospect Hill and the central part of Downtown, though. I agree that Zipcar can monitor demand, but if demand is also dropping because people don't think that cars are ever available at convenient times, it may not be the most reliable indicator.

I would love to see more food carts! A whole parking lot full sounds like a great idea!
Hopefully the cars have just been moved. You should ask Paul Hammer. I’ll email this issue to him.
