Trash is overflowing into the street. Parts of the sidewalk are inaccessible to those in a wheelchair. Everything is covered by tarps so can’t see a lot of it. Picture doesn’t truly capture how terrible and unsanitary it is.

Homeless individuals need assistance.

I am dumbfounded by why the City of Oakland allows this to happen? This area of Claremont has been like this for years and numerous neighbors like myself continue to call City Works, report it on ClickFix, call 311, etc. I've personally tried talking with Mayor Schaaf, Dan Kalb and any other city representative that I can find about this, but still nothing happens. I've actually had some good conversations with Joe Devries, Assistant to the City Manager and one of the lead people trying to address Oakland's homeless problem. I encourage EVERYONE that is concerned to call him at his office number (510-238-3083) and ask him to help our neighborhood and help this people. It's frustrating because we as citizens aren't allowed to intervene with this situation but the City obviously isn't going to do anything either. So camps like this spiral out of control until someone gets seriously hurt or commits a crime that warrants attention. Given the recent crime wave at BART and the fact that this situation is immediately across the street from the children's park, it seems like the City should be taking this very seriously.

This has nothing to do about politics. Its all about money. They have found another way to fleece the tax payed while enabling and pander these mentally ill and d--g addled street people. What our elected officials and the street people advocates are doing with these street people is unconscionable.

I too have been reporting this for over a year. Some folks have talked - maybe in jest, maybe seriously - about calling 1-900-Got-Junk and just paying to get this junk hauled away. It is utterly ridiculous that the City does nothing about this, across from a park that this community spent blood, sweat, and tears to build ... I know, I am the cofounder of the park.

I would think hafl a dozen of us, could rent a truck, pick us the trash and take it to the dump. If we liberate enough shopping carts we could pay for the trruck as they stores pay 25-50 per cart

Another idea is taking the major,city council head of the PWD to small claims court for violating the law,ordinances, rules and regulations of the City they were elected to uphold. The most each person could sue for is 10k times how many of your neighbors want this pile of junk removed. That would pay to get rid of it. There are cart retrieval companies out there on line that I have used to pick up empty carts. We had this problem on a smaller scale in the Dimond Dist a group of residents with pick up truck made it disappear.

This must be extremely frustrating for you Theresa, as this is such a wonderful example of a community built park. I'm still blown away by the fact that the City of Oakland is allowing these type of encampments to expand in and around Frog Park, as well as along the Temescal Creek. I am interested in the idea of addressing this ourselves since we are getting no support from the city (1-900-GOT-JUNK, renting a truck, etc to deal with the overflowing garbage), but wonder how best to do this without ending up in a situation like the person that destroyed an actual camp in Lake Merritt and ended up getting arrested.

Yes, please stop this immediately! This is the stolen shopping cars and junk from the campers on the Claremont Avenue off-ramp. They shouldn't be able to commandeer both the off ramp and Claremont Avenue under the freeway, especially after the long battle to clear this sidewalk.
