It is my understanding that this type of crossing signal (Red/Yellow simultaneous) is in violation of the 2009 MUTCD (The US DOT Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices)

My son has been in daycare on Mountain Ave for 3 months. We walk daily during peak rush hour for drop off/pick up and I have seen several cars blow through the red and yellow crosswalk while I am waiting to cross. I’ve also seen unaccompanied children using this intersection.

This is a very dangerous intersection where accidents occur all the time. The community has asked the city to look into improvements regarding this intersection to no avail. It is a shame that nothing will occur until an accident takes the life of a person trying to cross either Mountain or Main St. This is a major thoroughfare for people walking to the Early Learning Center, Post Office, Pool in the summer, YMCA, or commuters walking to Malden Center T Station. To make matters worse, the YMCA picks up and drops off kids on Mountain Ave which goes against their charter which causes back-ups on Mountain Ave. Drivers sitting in this traffic become impatient and speed through the intersection once the stop sign is retracted on the bus causing a dangerous situation at this intersection.

Any plans to fix this? I saw a woman cross this intersection this week while traffic was stopped at the red light. A turning vehicle failed to yield to a woman crossing with a baby in a stroller, and the driver then proceeded to yell at the woman for crossing. I am so frustrated by 1) the lack of sensible traffic design 2) the lack of traffic enforcement and 3) the lack of decency and respect by drivers that conditions 1 and 2 foster.
