@StevenZ I'd be interested in seeing the data that correlates pedestrian safety with decreased home values, or, more to your point, cut-through drivers and decreased values in the neighborhoods they cut through. I live on Lawncrest and our quality of life has vastly improved since the addition of speed humps. The only thing that decreased the value was the market crash (aka, "correction") of 2008.

I would like to see your data showing that hindering automobile access improves total city-wide quality of life and has zero or positive impact on total city-wide residential tax burden. New Haven also put speed bumps on my street, and (as an engineer) I know that the wear and tear on my cars will result in long-term increase in maintenance cost and the down-time of additional drive train repairs. As I said above, I share your safety concerns, but the correct answer is increased enforcement of speed limits which is the best way to solve this problem.

If you ask for speed bumps, you may get these strange little island things like they've just put in on Ramsdell (the construction project a block over that may be causing an increase in traffic on Anthony). My neighbor collected signatures in support of putting in speed bumps because we were seeing a lot of accidents and near-misses at Fairfield and Ramsdell, but we got these instead - better than nothing, but not what we expected. They're tricky for the bus to get around and we're all figuring they'll be invisible when it snows more than 6"...

By the by, I agree that we need a LOT more motor vehicle enforcement. I've spoke to Alder Brackeen about this and written the mayor and chief about it as well. My discussions with patrol supervisors yields the same response, for 18 years now, in that they claim we don't have enough patrol officers for dedicated details. I fundamentally disagree with that assertion as I believe it comes down to what the administration considers is a priority, and pedestrian/traffic safety just simply is not it (even after a 3 year old gets run over in a crosswalk).

Catherine- agreed about the new islands in Ramsdell. They will slow cars down but are going to be a nightmare in the winter, and I wouldn't be surprised if the plows have trouble maneuvering around them. I'm also worried about the maintenance of them. I and some neighbors currently maintain the traffic island at Ramsdell and Fountain since the City refuses to accept responsibility for the upkeep. I'm hoping some other neighbors will be vigilant with those little islands.
