Yep, you could literally open a police station at that corner and never stop giving tickets. It's outrageous.

And it is just as bad at Raymond and Upland - although the traffic volume be a little less than Raymond and Walden, it's right next to one of the park entrances. Motorists love speeding between those two 4-way stops on Raymond.

There is a real need for enforcement of moving violation regulations at this intersection. It would make a huge difference.

I agree with all of these comments. It would also help to make the block of Raymond street between Walden and Upland one way. Too many cars in too narrow a space.

Maybe this is happening mostly during rush hour.I make the Upland/Raymond turn twice a day, but after rush hour and never see this. Would definitely be against making Raymond St. one way, since it would tend to speed up traffic.

I agree with Alex that this is mostly a rush hour problem, when people are backed up at the intersection (after having just been backed up at Walden/Sherman and Walden/Garden, etc.), and also that one way streets do increase motorist speeds. Two-way roads are typically slower, especially if they are narrow.

From 4-7pm, people are driving too rapidly in general on Raymond Street -- from LInnaean to Upland, and then down to Raymond.

Last comment should have said down to Walden, not Raymond.

And they speed down Buena Vista Park to avoid the light at Upland & Mass Ave.
God help any car, animal or person/child obstructing their progress out of Washington across Upland and down BVP!

What about automated enforcement?

Unfortunately automatic traffic enforcement cameras are not allowed in MA (I think they might be unconstitutional, even?). It's too bad, because cameras would be excellent, continuous and unbiased enforcers of speeding, red lights, etc. From some googling, it looks like stop sign cameras are a thing, too.

Original poster here. This is a serious issue outside of rush hour. My car counts are outside of rush hour. Enforcement could help, but there is serious design flaws with the intersection. Cars heading on Walden towards Sherman frequently blow through the intersection at speed (saw this happen yesterday, a Sunday). A more visible stop sign or blinking sign is important.

A tree pruning request has been put in to DPW to increase visibility of the STOP signs. We will refer this to CPD for directed enforcement.

A "stop ahead" sign might be very useful here.

6:15 am Monday Feb 8, 2021 Pickup truck westbound on Walden sailed sailed right through without slowing as we were slowing northbound on Raymond to stop and turn right. Problem not solved -- ash tree or ash-h people? Put raised traffic platform as part of Raymond-Huron project. Preferably overly steep like Huron at Holly.

Cars continually blow through these stop signs without slowing down-- almost always from heading Westbound on Walden. Approaching the intersection from that direction, there is a playground sign in front of the stop sign. I suggest that sign be removed to avoid taking attention away from the stop sign.

Agreed—we live near this intersection and cars have blown through the stop sign mutliple times while *I* was in the crosswalk. I worry about the many kids who cross there (including mine) given the park and school bus stop there. Other cars do a rolling stop at best and many don’t look carefully before turning. A few weeks ago a car crashed off the side of the road and many police trucks and a fire engine had to respond. This intersection needs something more than a tree pruning and more visible signs to enforce the stop signs.

The fact that this has now been open for two years, apparently with no improvements that have made any difference, may be wroth a comment . I hope it is not necessary to wait until someone is seriously hurt.

Still a problem intersection over three years later. A quick scrub of this total joke of a Police Department's public data shows that literally zero tickets have been written here in at least two years.

With the recent changes to Garden Street, we have officers assigned to the area daily with a focus on the morning and evening commute periods.

Our various tools include education, verbal warnings, written citations, and other enforcement. As part of these efforts, we have also placed speed trailers on Garden Street and on Raymond Street.
