Yes, I notice this when running by at night. Thank you for posting this. I have always found it odd that there is a sign that says "public right of way to West River" but then the gate is chained shut. The state should come and remove the gate. Public right of ways cannot be restricted. It is against the law.

Here is a picture of Public Access sign at Chapel Street next to the padlocked gate. There is a similar sign on the Derby Avenue side.

Now that the state of Connecticut has "taken over" the New Haven Open, the need to resolve the issue of public access on this site has become even more acute.

For years whenever a public hike is planned, a key and "permission" have to be gotten from Yale.

I agree with ABGoode that this should be addressed. Does anyone know the exact access that is granted and how far it extends?

Not sure exactly what the law says here, but we have asked Tennis Center staff for the key for access previously, not permission per se. The key opens the gates on Chapel Street by the bridge and the gate near the corner of Yale & Derby Ave. This section between the two gates would likely be the easiest and preferred routing for the future West River Greenway.
