We (Lots of Fish) are working in that area with summer youth employment. We cleanup a significant amount of trash along the curb at Norton and Chapel before we painted the storm drain art. In our focus group discussion, the students noticed that there is only one public garbage can compared to two or more that are placed near convenience stores in other areas, like Orange St, it has at least one in front of each convenience store. The students think, if people had a similarly convenient place to throw garbage, it would not end up so conveniently on the street, some getting washed into the storm drains, and eventually into the rivers! Can the students request garbage pails through SeeClick Fix?

The city needs to install garbage cans along (1) Chapel Street, starting west of EG Boulevard stretching to Yale Avenue, and (2) Edgewood Avenue, starting at Pendleton Street headed west to Yale Avenue. Both these major roads lack any places to dispose of garbage, and huge amounts end up on the street and in drains every day. Both roads also have significant illegal dumping problems in these sections that some fencing could at least help alleviate.

Thank you for all of your hard work and hopefully people will see the cleaned ups streets and not continue to litter. Perhaps more trash cans would help but they will then need to be maintained and emptied regularly. One of the big issues is that people just throw garbage out of their car into the street as I witness on a daily basis and discover in front of my house everyday.

Yes we agree that garbage cans are not the only solution, but can be part of it. The city garbage cans (black lathed metal ones) get picked up during weekly trash pick-up routes. But we've noticed that the singular garbage can for the entire corner with two convenience stores, and a lot of pedestrian traffic is not enough, it begins to overflow onto the sidewalk and onto the street. So people are using it, there needs to be more though.

We were going to ask the convenience store owners if they would empty a trash can ( we would paint ) that would stay outside their door . . that may help as well. In general a public education campaign along with some deterrent could be useful, I've seen cars dumping their trash on the street too. Maybe some large cross-street banners that ask people not to dump, would at least start a shift of consciousness , maybe? I will bring it up to our students and see if they have any other ideas they want to try to implement. I'll or they'll keep you posted.

Sorry this wasn't previously closed. As indicated, more trash cans are not necessarily the solution. As the initial request was from 2020 we will close this request as staff have been assigned numerous times since to address and remove litter/debris.

Please create a new request ticket for a specific problem when it occurs so staff can address accordingly.
