Description
For the past several days, several times a day, there is a high-pitched, constant hum that can be heard throughout the neighborhood. It is especially loud near the Cambridge hospital, but doesn't seem to be coming from the hospital. I am not sure where it is coming from, but it affects the entire area. It is really, really aggravating because it can be easily heard indoors when our windows are open. I have recordings of it.

I've seen other reports of this here in the past (although possibly in a different part of the City?), and yesterday I heard it, too, from the area somewhere east of Cambridge Hospital; maybe somewhere along Hampshire St. I was aware of it from inside my house, with open windows, and it about drove me mad. It lasted for about 30 minutes, and I experienced physical, mental, and emotional relief when it stopped.
My impression was that it was coming from one of the neighborhoods just south of Inman Square, or perhaps in Inman Square itself.
Please look into this!
Thank you.

This noise is coming from the CRLS school. There have been comments on recent posts regarding it. See:

But there does not seem to be any clear resolution to it. One of the posts expected it to continue through the first few weeks of Sept.

I am not in agreement that this is definitively coming from CRLS. I am east of the school and can hear it from an area east of me.
It may be more widespread than thought, or possibly be echoing/deflecting off of structures in any number of directions.
Are we talking about two different noise-pollution events? I am hearing a very high-pitched whine; not something I'd categorize as a hum.
Regardless, it - or they - needs looking into.

It is due to the failure of the city to maintain the system. I have been told that it should be fixed by Sept 4th. I hope it is. This has been going on for almost 10 years and has gotten progressively worse.

Vedad Konjic the Director of Facilities Cambridge Public Schools, informed me that 4 of the boilers at the War Memorial were shut off. Please comment, via this site, if you have noticed a difference. Thank you, Andrea Boyer (License Commission).

The sound is definitely better. I assumed that they had shut off the boilers.
I did hear one of the sounds this am coming from the building. But at a much lower sound level.
The problem is... it does not fix the problem.
Historically when I have complained the boiler making the noise was shut off not serviced.
There are five boilers. Eventually it will get cold and they will have to be turned on. If they have not been properly serviced the increasingly loud noise will be back.
