The streets are too wide for pedestrians to cross during a single green light. In addition, the crosswalks are angled, making the distance even further. Traffic is extremely fast through this area as well, and motorists often race through lights or turn right on red without slowing down.

Additionally on the westerly side of the intersection there is no place of refuge for pedestrians caught in the lights while crossing between - there is one on the easterly side and this helps direct traffic, and keeps the traffic and pedestrians separated, in their respective zones and overall safer.

The timing of the lights while perhaps working in favor of traffic flow, leaves pedestrians lost in the lurch. The double lane of traffic means that while one car yields to a pedestrian others in other lanes proceed with both proceeding drivers and xing pedestrians blind to crossing paths. This situation was a similar cause behind the tragic accident xing MLK drive near Eakins oval this spring ('09).
