Opis

If a bike rider is alone at the red light (without a car and driver waiting as well) at this location and at least two others I've experienced (N. Peachtree and Tilly Mill, and Chamblee Dunwoody and Roberts), the red light will never, ever change. At this particular intersection, I continually get stuck trying to make a left from Tilly Mill onto Mt. Vernon. The right turning lane is very busy so running over and pushing the pedestrian button is not a safe option. Also, Mt. Vernon is very busy and "running the light" is not a safe option either. Is there a fast, easy way for you to adjust the sensors so that red lights are "bike-friendly"? Alternative routes are no better an option as they all have their own safety issues. Thanks. Why not just become a pedestrian pushing a bicycle at this type of intersection? When I was a kid, we were taught to walk our bike across a busy intersection. Safety demands that cyclists be aware that a typical rider and equipment weigh no more than 200 pounds, whereas a typical automobile weighs no less than 3000 pounds. Do the math and the physics.

Dun Res--I do revert to that on days when I just don't have the gumption anymore. But maybe this is a quick señor adjustment. ANd isn't it worth asking, if that's all it will take? I think it may be happening all over our city. It's a weird feeling as a bike rider to be praying for a car next to me just so I can get through the light! Here's today's video, by the way. Heard from Michael Smith. No current bike detection sensors. Possibly in the future. I asked if he could identify what type of sensors are currently there (there are a variety of them commonly used in cities) and to mark the location with a small white x, as some other cities do, so that bike riders could try some common 'tricks" involving specific positioning of their bikes to change the electromagnetic field and thus activate the sensors. I asked for that at this location as well as at the corner of N. Peachtree and Tilly Mill, and Chamblee Dunwoody and Roberts, as I've had the same problem there (although both of those locations do not have the dangerous right turn lane thing going on). It may be an issue at all lights in our city. I don't know.

Pattie, I grew up in Florida, but I know people from elsewhere that learned the same thing. I would like to ride my bike on city streets, but I do not, because I have a strong sense of self-preservation. You illustrated the reason for my apprehension in your latest video. I consider all other drivers on the road to be homicidal until proven otherwise.

While stuck again yesterday, I identified the location of the saw cuts on the pavement and attempted to position my bike to affect the electromagnetic field to thereby activate the sensors, but it did not work. If the city could just let us know what kind of sensors they are, I can do more specific research on how to activate them. Also, folks "in the biz" are telling me that adjusting the sensitivity of the sensors so that they "pick up" bike riders is an easy fix by our traffic engineer. Is this possibly just a quick and easy fix on your end? That would be great if so. Thanks for all you do.

FIXED! BIG THANKS to the City of Dunwoody and to our independent traffic signal engineer, Eli Vieth. It took him less than 15 minutes to adjust the sensors in both directions so that they pick up bike riders, plus he s going to fix the other two I cited as well. So nice to have such a responsive city truly committed to being bike-friendly. Thank you.
