How about the stretch on Chapel b/w East Street and James? This is a major entrance to Fair Haven and it looks like a war zone. Sidewalks are dangerous. Weeds are everywhere. The trees are dead. Graffiti. Garbage everywhere. This is a vital stretch that links downtown to Fair Haven and it screams "poverty" "danger" "crime" "neglect" - messages that New Haven needs to work against. Is there something creative that could be done in this stretch? For example, trees simply don't survive - probably b/c of the huge salt piles leaking residue into the soil. Maybe, artistic metal trees in different colors could be created by local artists and "planted" along a stretch with new sidewalks and new fencing.

I know they were Police officers, but don't we hold their grievers to the same standards?
this memorial really looks terrible and the fence has not been replaced yet.

Thanks for pointing this out, Jeannette.
And to the person named "Real Issues?" I have a few things to say to you - please do not assume that none of us have lived in a 'war zone' because you'll find that some actually have.
Second, you don't have to have lived in a war zone to know what it looks like. And just so you know, trashy, nasty, neglected neighborhoods present "Real Issues" to those who live there.

Selam is absolutely correct on the use of the term, "War Zone."
Someone else reported a specific issue concerning this corridor: http://www.seeclickfix.com/issues/65242
Please visit there and vote on it too, since it represents a specific proposed solution about the metal dump -- it wouldn't fix this entire street but would help.
I think the neighbors on this post should fill out a "complete streets" request form for this block. Get the request into the system so that the city can prioritize it (versus its 200+ other miles of street) and so something can be done. The city's transportation or engineering office can help you fill out a form, if you don't have any luck getting them to help, please contact newhavensafestreets (at) gmail.com and folks will be happy to assist.

This keeps coming up. Will anything ever be done about this?
