So I fully agree with this.
If they want to play bells (or the recording of bells) I would not be so disturbed, as long as the volume is reasonable (and: given that this is a new recording, they may not be aware that the technician set it louder than the previous one was).
The problem is that this is not a recording of bells! It's the recording of some synth reproduction of bells, organ (with arpeggios and all!), and some other sounds I cannot even recognize.
I am 100% sure that Jesus doesn't like this sound.

Maybe one of the neighborhood association representatives can speak to the pastor personally and they will figure it out. Or you could just write a letter to the church with your request and the neighbors asking for a lower volume. They may not follow See Click Fix.

From a block or so away, it's a lovely sound. Maybe they should lower the volume, but church bells are part of life. Beats all the sirens.

And yes, "real" bells would be much nicer. But then volume control would be harder - unless you hired only weak-limbed bell-ringers.

The volume is too loud--I have to close my windows if I'm on the phone, for example. Can the City tell them to turn it down?!

I'm so glad that other people are as bothered by these "bells" as I am. I live on Cottage St and get blasted by that noise everyday, multiple times on the weekend. It's way too loud, and the tinny fakeness of the sound grates on my ears. They seem to have cycled through several bells CDs lately: some involve what another poster described as the synthesizer arpeggi. Makes me think of a cheap production of a Tchaikovsky ballet -- not in a good way. And maybe worst of all, the bell doesn't actually toll out the hour! It just chimes randomly and irregularly, and it continues to do so in the background of whatever crappy chorale they've chosen for the day. I'm not a religious person, so I'm already bitter about people sonically imposing their faith on me. But the main issue that most residents could probably agree on is that the "bells" are too loud. I bet if the city ran a decibel test within a two block radius they'd get a reading that's in violation of the noise ordinance. And if churches are exempt from the ordinance, the logical next step would be to lobby our alder to close that loophole. I'm up for sending letters to the church first to see if they'll compromise. Has anyone actually discussed this with the priest?

I called the church, the person who I spoke to was super nice and called back to let me know that they turned down the volume. In terms of the quality of the music/recording (which I agree is terrible), I think that the church would be receptive to good advice. I suggest scheduling a time with the priest and bringing a few sample recordings. Or mailing them with a nice card. Is there a musician on this thread? maybe they'd appreciate expert advice.

I bet they would most appreciate a donated set of higher-quality speakers...

How about they just stop ringing the 'bells'? I wonder how sanguine people would be if The Church of Antichrist on Edwards Street played death metal at top volume at various times of day. Why am I forced to listen to bell music at all??

If they just rang the bells at a more respectful volume - one that does not wake babies or interrupt conversations - that would be a sure sign that they are interested in not offending the community. The mechanical church tunes that offer an auditory clash to the tolling of the bells should seriously desist, though.

At the risk of bring blasted, churches ring bells, it's what they do. When I moved into the area I looked around and saw churches, so I knew there was a chance I'd hear bells. It's part of the neighborhood I chose to join.

I won't blast PJ, but I will say that the mechanical choir tunes are new and super-loud... hence the posts. Most of the other churches seem to have actual bells, which are much nicer, and none of them are broadcasting tinny music for ten-minute stints. To be clear: I have lived close to this particular church for nearly 20 years and this level of noise is new.

Hmm, well I think that, were I in your shoes, I'd sit down with them and have a friendly chat. I'd be a bit nervous, but I'd try that. If this is a change they have made recently that is alienating people, they may need some time, but I bet some meeting can be made half way.

The church has been here a lot longer than used have you don't like it just move most you don't own property anyhow you just rent Yale's puppets
