In the past, when I have told a tourist that this street was resident parking only, he said, “I’ll take the ticket”.

In October all parking fines should be doubled. More towing should be happening.

The signs we had to keep asking to get posted are useless if a non-resident parking ban is:
(a) not enforced
(b) get a $15. 'slap on the wrist'
(c) get more than 1 ticket but are not towed
(d) can pay less than in a garage or lot

The orange signs are a placebo to 'keep the residents happy'. Yes! tourists do 'own' Salem.
Residents are not asked if they want Salem to be a 6 months of the year 'hub' for tourists.
What happened to the city Salem used to be? It's charm & 'community' has gone by the wayside in the pursuit of the tourists' almighty dollar. We've been reduced to principally being a downtown of boutique shops & restaurants.
And, in addition, our schools still have serious problems, homelessness continues to grow, etc -- yet, it's all about being the 'premier destination' on the North Shore. Is that 'all' Salem is about?!
Our neighboring communities & Cape Ann have escaped this scourge & remain 'real communities' of 'residents' 1st.
The question is: Will the residents of Salem continue to let this happen?
WHO comes 1st in this city?
We're hearing these same concerns from people of all ages.

The person writing the ticket should be calling for a tow truck, the signs on Williams Street clearly say Resident sticker parking only tow zone.

Salem is a fantastic place to live, work, play. As an older citizen, I feel perfectly safe walking anywhere, any time. For that, I thank the current administration. I agree that more enforcement of parking "bans" should be done, fines doubled, etc.

What about the residents & the community that was Salem?

The goal in Salem is to cater to the tourist. The last thing they want to do is tow visitors cars. Salem is completely out of control.

Towing cars is the only way they can guarantee payment of fines. Out-of-state tourists just ignore these tickets.

Tuesday night and the Maryland car is still there. Still only two tickets on it.

Is anyone paying attention in Salem? Tourism remains supreme.

I’m sick and tired of this. On Federal St. It’s hard enough to find resident spots available because there’s currently a huge dumpster taking up 2 spots. I see tourists without resident stickers parked in resident areas every day and they never even get a ticket! It makes me so angry. Except the one time I park in a metered spot because there’s NO RESIDENT SPOTS LEFT and I get a $25 ticket. I hate this city so much.

Wow, 15 bucks?? That is ridiculous, it is 25 for us residents if we are late on a parking meter!! Agree with all the above posts, didn't we just have a new Parking Commissioner appointed? And this is what we are getting? 15 dollar tickets and no tows? Obviously they do not care. They will when voting time comes. Just looked him up, contact Matt Smith directly. Call him, call the Mayor's office, call the police. Don't just post on here. If they do not tow, they are a joke, all of the depts together.

The Resident Parking Only signs should be accompanied by a “tow zone” and map of parking lots available to tourists (especially the free parking/shuttle bus lots).

Towing needs to be approved by a Sargent and the policy at this time is to not tow resident only violators unless the are blocking driveways or hydrants etc.In another week the city will say the problem is over. As you can see the increased number of meters is a gold mine for the city and a stab in the back for residents. The have it timed perfectly so that if you have jury duty you cant get to your car before the meter expires. Awesome

Be a shame if those 2 tickets were to blow away in the wind, and the infraction go unnoticed until the scofflaw goes to renew his license. A lot of times vandals target out of state cars, too.

Honestly, where is the parking dept in all this? Nice to see the current administration is all about screwing over residents, and bending over backwards for the tourists. Hopefully Prevey can do something about all this. The tickets should be 75.00. Towing should happen when someone calls the police, period. Awful, with complete silence from the Mayor's office and the Parking Dept. Great leadership.

Seems today the Mayor has finally spoken, now just email parking@salem.com and all your wishes will be granted. Also, fines are $40 on October weekends according to the email.

If it's anything like snow@salem.com then I expect nothing will happen.

Except that since it's an out of state plate it will never get into the MA RMV database therefore will never go into a non-renewable status for license or registration.

It's always 'referred'...... but nothing is done. If something is taken care of, it's a rare phenomenon.
Glad to know there are many others in Salem, who are tired of this lack of interest & action, in what the city's residents (rather than tourists) think & need for our community.

Let's hope residents DO wake up, Diane. It's past time.
If Salem continues on the path it is currently following, residents may as well kiss goodbye what may be left of a real 'community'.
All the tourists may like a 'boutiques' city, but those of us who live here are tired fo Salem's tourist gentrification.
