The City of Oakland Call Center has received this issue. Your service request ID is #795661. Please check back for status updates, or contact us directly at 510-615-5566.
Any encampments near the Lake need to be removed. It is the one bright spot in the downtown that is the focus of our city. The disease, uncleanliness, rubbish and potential for injury and city liability for allowing encampments in its parks is costing our city in terms of resources that could be better used to feed and relocate these folks in better locations
Thank you for your request. According to our system, we already have an open service request of this kind at this location. Your request has been combined with service request #795625. If you would like to check the status of the request, please contact the City of Oakland Call Center at 510-615-5566 or callcenter@oaklandnet.com.
I'll be looking on Friday to see these tents gone. I also sent a photo of the cabinet in the water to Lake Merritt Institute. I'm following up on these encampments by the lake to City of Oakland, Joanne Karchmer, Joe DeVries, Sara Bedford, Christina Daniels. OPD and Alameda County Sheriff's office. The lake is federally protected watershed and wildlife refuge. Let's all complain and demand relocation away from the Lake!
Has anyone contacted Calif Fish and Wildlife? or SF Water Quality Control Board. Also the City of Oakland's CUPA ( Certified Unified Program Agency) is Alameda Co Environmental Heath which is under CalEPA. Oakland already has serious problems with litter and run off pollution with the SF Water Board who is part of CalEPA. I agree the more pressure from out side agencies on the City of Oakland is what is needed.
I haven’t, have you? I’m starting to look for environmental groups to gain support from. I like your ideas. Please list contacts for the agencies you listed and what the response has been if you contacted them.
I am in Contact with the SF Water Board and Alameda Co Environmental Heath over Oakland's street level pollution, motor oil, litter and other contaminates going into the water shed. I will find out who dealing with this issue. I will have some more info in a couple of days.
Great! My goal is to humanely relocate all the campers in and around Lake Merritt and especially Peralta Park. I'll also be working to keep the area free of debris. I'll be advocating for park ranger/s to be hired to patrol the parks.
I was shocked to learn yesterday, that PW re routes call's about debris located in and around encampments. For them to pick up debris, they need it to be "approved" by the homeless management team or else it's a liability. Outrageous!
I, too, am interested and invested in the environmental risk of these homeless encampments and have been researching where to find the right advocacy group. So far in my research, and after meeting with Abel Guillen, he suggested the folks from Measure DD. There is a new website--lakemerritt.org concerning the lake. The first meeting of the Lake Merritt advocates met last November. The next meeting is March 20, and i plan to attend to learn how to create a coalition around the danger the homeless encampments do to the environment. We all need to meet to advocate to make the city relocate the encampments permanently and then, provide continual and regular enforcement of their removal. I am sure there are other items I have not thought about, but I will be at the March 20th meeting and would love to meet other people who are frustrating and want to work together to do something.
I meant, I would like to meet other people like the commenters here who are "frustrated" with the environmental risks of this on-going situation. I will be at the meeting on March 20th.
Thanks for the link. I recognize a lot of organizations I've been involved with in the past or now. I'm glad you extended this resource. I want to get involved. The website says March 20, the calendar says the 19th for the next meeting.
An abandoned library in Oakland used by homeless was burned down this week. Whether it was set on fire by negligent occupants of the building or people who were just fed up with homeless people invading and setting up camp on public property is uncertain. The issue here is public safety and I suspect that one way or another those encampments by the Lake will end up in flames. I don't want to see that happen. Move them out of Snow Park soon so that type of episode does not repeat itself at the Lake.
U.S Fish and Wildlife and Calif Fish and Wildlife said this all on Oakland to fix and to contact the Lake Merritt Nature center and the Lake Merritt Institute. This is a prime example of how are elected officials are treating all of Oakland. These vagrants and street zombies have priority over everything else in the City. They need to be fined and jailed for what they are doing. Tarred and Feathered and run out on rail would be better.
