Description
Flashing in-pavement alert lights should be installed at the crosswalk on E. 31st outside of Emergency room entrance of Highland Hosp. Everyday many hospital staffs use the cross walk to come to work after they parked in the neighborhood. And many patients come by bus due to parking space limitation or social economy status – there is a bus stop on the other side of 31st street right outside of the hospital, thus they have to use the crosswalk. Patient population has a wide age range and physical ability, kids and handicapped patients are very common.
Unfortunately visibility for motorists to spot pedestrians is rather poor because of the location of the crosswalk. Many motorists and pedestrians alike had experienced close calls where accidents almost happened due to such poor visibility, especially during dawn and dusk.
By installing pedestrian-activated flashing in-pavement alert lights on the crosswalk many potential tragedies could be prevented.
