Please, make the fireworks stop! It sounds like we are under attack.

Fireworks last night in the vicinity of Tremont and Hampshire.

This is a real fire hazard. Last night I could see the full blown fireworks bursting over nearby houses. There were about ten of them fired off in quick succession.

Seems that the CPD is powerless to stop them.

Enforcement is more about permission than power when there are political consequences. A fireworks-related arrest was in fact made in east Cambridge recently and it's not hard to understand why it was done as a vehicle stop.

It's true that possession alone may not be grounds for arrest. [May an officer arrest? For possession, no.] However, setting off fireworks in a manner that may cause harm or "disturb the peace" is a different matter. That said, my guess is that police would simply take their names, run them through their database, "give them a good talking to," and warn them that if it reoccurs they may be arrested for disturbing the peace or worse. That will probably be enough. By the way, if someone can catch a license plate that might be very helpful.

Police officers are required to confiscate the fireworks. That's the important part. Is there any effort to do that?

It is illegal for private citizens to use, possess, or sell fireworks in Massachusetts, or to purchase them legally elsewhere and then transport them into the state. The law prohibits any article designed to produce a visible or audible effect. The penalty can be a fine or imprisonment or both, and confiscation. Thus far, we have confiscated a number of fireworks and did make an arrest, in which a Boston resident faces multiple firearms charges as well as unlawful possession of fireworks.

We are directing available patrols to locations at the times in which we are receiving calls and Officers have witnessed fireworks. Our Officers confiscated a large set of fireworks, marijuana, a scale and cash earlier last night in The Port after a series of firework calls. Later in the evening, Officers located a large group at a parking lot and stayed on scene until the crowd eventually dispersed.

We have been directing available patrols to locations at the times in which we are receiving calls and Officers have witnessed fireworks.

Individuals caught possessing and/or shooting off fireworks are subject to fines and arrest. The challenge for Officers can be when they come across large groups, as it can be difficult to identify who is responsible for shooting or possessing the fireworks.
