The construction crew renovating 110 Pleasant Street is not properly protecting the old sycamore tree on the property and seems to be trying to intentionally kill it. They didn't put up any real protection, they drive over its roots all the time, and they lean all kind of materials against it. They dug a big hole next to it (on the side that is not near the construction) to in order to bury a big chunk of old foundation so they wouldn't have to dispose of it properly. This is a beautiful old tree treasured by the neighborhood. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE send someone from the city to evaluate the damage they've already done (to fine them?) and demand they properly protect this tree.

Thank you for reporting this issue. The current Tree Protection Ordinance requires a permit to remove trees greater than 8" in DBH. Currently, there is no language in the Ordinance that enables Public Works to enforce tree protection during construction on residential trees.

There should be. How about looking into that. So the tree is damaged and during construction eventually dies and ten they get to take it down? It is not hard to wrap the tree and prevent digging next to it.

We spoke with the developer/contractor and informed them what we would like to see for tree protection. Under the current ordinance, Public Works does not have the ability to enforce tree protection requirements on residential development. An amendment to the ordinance would be required to allow us to enforce tree protection.

If you are not allowed to take down a mature healthy tree and then intentionally destroy the roots killing the tree is this not the same as taking it down in the first place? Also isn’t burying construction debris also a violation?

The construction company put protection around the tree and brought an arborist out, but the arborist concluded the tree is fine even though a quarter of its roots have been dug up and the rest are piled 6 feet high with dirt. They are continuing to mistreat this tree, but unfortunately it seems the tree ordinance in Cambridge does not allow the city to do much more. Many neighbors are very sad and frustrated to see the crew continue to damage the tree.

Who was the arborist? What does Inspectional Services/ Building Dept. have to say? Don’t give up! I’m sure they just want to put in more parking. That is a great tree! Call the city council if you haven’t already. Good luck.
