Following up on this post from Dec. 2020. This fence that is obstructing the view of drivers, bikers and pedestrians remains an issue at the corner of Dyer St. and Colony Road. A month ago LCI noted that this would hopefully "be resolved shortly" and that the issue had been referred to LCI Beaver Hills. LCI, please follow up to be sure this structure (fence) is lowered, altered or removed to comply with City of New Haven fence ordinances. Traffic safety at this corner needs to be taken seriously. Do not wait until an accident occurs to act.

We are taking action and will serve a Violation letter

A portion of the fence has been removed.

A follow up inspection will occur next week.

I'm puzzled by the conclusion of LCI. First, there is still a serious visibility issue at this intersection because of the fence. Additionally, according to New Haven's fence regulations https://newhaven.in.gov/DocumentCenter/View/210/Fence-Regulations-PDF, this fence is still significantly out of compliance. My understanding is that any portion of the fence in the front yard and the entire length along Dyer St. is limited to 2.5 feet in height. If a permit was issued for this fence, why were these issues not brought to the resident's attention?

A Cease and Desist letter has been issued for a Corner Visibility Violation under the Zoning Code. There has been some movement as evidenced by the above photo from 1.15.21.We expect more of the fence to be removed. This is a legal issue and may take some time outside of the realm of LCI.

The situation is better / safer now ( a step in the right direction) we too hope 100% compliance occurs as soon as possible . The City must follow the legal process, LCI has moved this difficult issue forward and will continue to work with our lawyers and Zoning staff. This is a group effort by several departments.

@ Interested Neighbor: A permit was issued for a deck by the Building Department in September of 2020.

Thank you for more details regarding this issue. Not sure the date the fence was erected but October seems about right. The photo posted by LCI on 1/15/21 to indicate the fence has been partially removed to allow for increased visibility reveals a secondary, however, equally important issue. The contents and clutter in the front yard are now clearly exposed creating a very undesireable eyesore in the neighborhood.

I fail to understand how this issue could be considered resolved. Despite the corner of the fence having been "cut off", the fence is still in violation of City code for height along Colony Rd and Dyer, and it still poses a visibility problem for drivers and pedestrians. Furthermore, this is one of many intersections in Beaver Hills where the stop signs are regularly ignored.
