These potholes have been reported several times in the past five years since I’ve been living here and nothing happens. I see too many bicyclists crash hitting these holes and giant gaps along the old train track. When big trucks run over this set of potholes, it shakes my entire house. It sure would be nice to get these fixed on his high traffic street. I can hear cargo on the passing trailers go airborne and fall back with a tumble.

Our next step with your request will be to review it and assign it a priority level so that we can respond as promptly and appropriately as we can to the thousands of requests we receive each year. We’d like also to take this opportunity to share some information with you about how we’re taking on the bigger task of improving all Oakland streets – including fully repaving streets. In general, for our 3-Year Paving Plan (adopted in mid-2019) we prioritized local streets based on the Pavement Condition Index (https://oakgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8802147bcb4b42bfb21846e36205fe4d), working generally from the worst streets next to schools, to the worst streets otherwise, until our budget target was met. With this plan, we will be repaving more than 70 miles of local streets in three years. This is a massive increase in funding dedicated to local streets: in the past ten years we averaged just under 3 miles of local streets paving per year. They will refer this to Union Pacific or BNSF, which will have zero result. Unfortunately, West Oakland and other industrial flatlands neighborhoods are crisscrosssed by “@#$%” railroad right-of-ways that are still the property of these railroads. As such, the cities can’t touch the crumbling pitted asphalt between these tracks for property and liability reasons. Despite the fact that many of them no longer have trains on them, the RR’s are reluctant to sell them or transfer them to the cities since they are useful bargaining tools or leverage. Very often, due to turnover of personnel, the city staffs don’t know which ones belong to whom, or who to talk to (and in the end, a RR-side decision to change anything can only be made on the national level).
