This is blatant intimidation. Blaming property owners when other people illegally dump garbage on their property is not a solution to the problem of illegal dumping, which the city has allowed to get totally out of control in this neighborhood. All it does is make property owners reluctant to report criminal activities affecting their buildings, for fear they'll be charged with maintaining a "blighted" property and cited. "Code enforcement" isn't what's needed - what we need here is enforcement of the laws against dumping garbage and debris all over this part of the City.
The plastic bags finally got picked up - only to be replaced by a pile of tires. (Somebody's making money by collecting the "tire disposal fee" and then dumping them illegally - I've seen these piles appearing all over town.) The tires have been "acknowledged", but as of yesterday that's all that's been done about them. This area should get a weekly pickup of illegally-dumped debris; there's always something to collect.
The tires were picked up, but - as predicted - there are new bags of garbage in the doorway of the same building on Prune Street, right around the corner.
There actually is a camera on the utility pole facing the place where stuff gets dumped every week. I don't think anybody watches the tapes, though; I certainly haven't heard of anybody getting busted for this.
Those particular bags did get picked up eventually. But there's another batch of them about 20 feet away, that have been waiting under our sole street tree at the corner of Prune and San Leandro for over a month now for Public Works to come and get them.
The pile under the tree finally got picked up. But just as I was enjoying the newly clean streetscape, a big yellow ex-Penske box truck pulled up and dumped a large electric double oven in the middle of Prune Street, in the middle of the block between San Leandro and Pippin. Please come get it - I'm sure there will be even more by the time you get there.
No tags, at least on the back of that truck. Maybe I'm being over-optimistic, but things seem to have improved a little lately; several piles have been removed without my having to complain about them specifically, and with the street looking basically clean, it hasn't invite further dumping over the last week. Keep up the good work, guys!
