While it looks bad and is illegal for homeless people to be there, we need to remember, every time homeless people are kicked out of someplace, they don't just magically disappear. They actually go somewhere else and people might not like where they go.

At least now, they're in front of a city owned empty building. That sounds a lot better than homeless people being in front of privately owned apartment buildings, restaurants and other shops.

@Tommy I agree with you, they don't just disappear. Perhaps there is a "homeless action team" needed to address the need and guide them to a shelter that has beds to receive them. I am concerned though with the open IV drug use in the community and what happens with those used needles that are a potential risk hazard for citizens(children particularly) that walk that sidewalk every day. They are not there just at night while the city sleeps but also during the day or hang out on the store across the street.

While I appreciate the comment on remembering the needs of homeless people for shelter, perhaps Edgewood Place did not read the part of the comment about the drug use. This is not a use that should be tolerated in such close proximity to the area where our HILL children travel daily ... the Courtland Wilson public library, the John Martinez public school, the Boys & Girls Club and the Lulac day care center.

The truth is, my homeboys and I don't sleep in the totalitarian Orwellian shelters for various reasons and we make a strong effort to sleep in places where the fuzz won't screw with us. We have been kicked out of the Green area too many times. The cops tell us to sleep in places where nobody can see us. That is the worst advice possible. We need to sleep where people can see us. If we try to sleep in places where we can't be seen, that makes us targets of criminal activity. Sleeping on the Green is a dream. It would be very much appreciated if folks would just allow us to sleep there and not complain. Otherwise, you will see us sleeping in locations closer to your homes.

@Hill Resident- the homeless are not a threat to anyone just because they are transients. I most certainly read the part about illicit drug use, and also expressed my concerns for that. I was raised and still live and work in this community. There are more homeless people now than what I remember growing up in this very same community. We in New Haven need to have at least 2 "Safe Consumption use facilities" where people with substance use disorders can go to do their thing in a safe clean environment with medial readily available and counseling for those who are ready for a change. Perhaps the scenery will change in our community. I know no one likes to sleep on the street, on cement, hungry wet or cold...they are suffering from a mental health disorder...we need to help these members of our community to be in a better place.

@ Edgewood - My apologies - I think I misread your post. I don't support the idea of 'safe consumption use facilities'. While I would share all my resources and give all of my time to help a loved one to rid themselves of psychological or biological drug addiction, I would never support making it easier and safer for them to continue harming themselves. And I'm speaking from personal experience ... but that is a different topic. I believe we can agree that there is a need for shelter for all, and we as a city/community should provide more options for ALL who need and want it. But when a public area is used for shelter as well as an area for criminal activities... then that is a problem. And while we may not be able to solve every problem or address all societal issues all at once, let's not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. THAT shelter needs to stay down because of how it is being used. And THAT is a simple fix.
