All this debris, the cars that they use for storage, and those porto-potties the city dropped off in an attempt to 'help' the encampment - they are all in the way for me to get to my bus stops in the morning. And for many other people who live in this area as well. The sidewalk should be clear and I should be able to walk confidently to my bus stop so I can get to work. (Let me thank OPD, though, for clearing the sidewalk that runs along the side of the onramp!)

My only choice is to walk in the middle of the road, with oncoming traffic that is flying down off the freeway (580). My safety should not be compromised, and no one else's should be either. I call dispatch, but the dispatcher 70 told me to file an issue here. Please address this in a timely manner. It has been this way for months (and it gets worse every time they do a sweep of the free junk left out in the neighborhood, which they bring back to the encampment).

One more thing - they now sell bikes. Stolen bikes, because I don't see a Trek sign or any authorized dealer insignia on their signs.

And there's a mattress hung on the side of one of the porto-potties.

I should add - this is where Harrison/Santa Clara/MacArthur meet across from the Quik Trip. I'm sure their employees would also appreciate a response to this matter.

The people at this encampment exhibit dangerous behaviors -- open drug-use and sales, loud & harassing behavior, vandalism & criminal activity (kicked in and broke QuikStop's window), open bonfires, destruction/grafitti over of cal-trans funded/neighborhood supported public mural/art-giraffics, increased blight. It has seriously degraded the neighborhood/safety of people. Absolutely unacceptable this is tolerated. This encampment needs to be closed.

This triangle under 580 is Caltrans property.They have been trying to remove this illegal encampment and fence it off. Our city leadership is fighting them the whole way. Please out a CSR (customer service request) at there web site or call 286-6173.

@David - this is helpful. Will contact Caltrans. Any specific Caltrans contact that we could speak/meet with? Any details on the conflict? (We've been writing to city/DeVries with no response.)

The sidewalks are Oakland. And please hold off on CalTrans. The encampment will just move onto the sidewalks. I have watched this happen for the last two years from my apartment. Trust me.

I do not have a regular contact. This issue was brought up in dealing with clearing a smaller encampment under 580 at Fruitvale Ave. There site will show that there a duplicate issue in the system but I would keep adding to it and calling. The city has became useless in dealing with epidemic of self medicating street zomb!es who really do not want to be helped. Joe DeVries seems to be milking the system/taxpayer dry till retirement and he is not alone in this corrupt city.

zwkelly I did not see your post when I commented. When we had our caltrans properties cleared the illegal campers tried to pull that off. We kept them from setting back up and they left. We took back our neighborhood. Good luck I cringe every time I take that exit.

@zwkelly - what do you propose as our options for addressing this if not CalTrans -- and no response from DeVries? (I see that, within last 2 days, some tents and garbage have now moved to the street between some of the car campers.)

We need to keep pressuring the city of Oakland. Oakland and CalTrans refuse to work together. CalTrans is statewide, so they aren't privy to one city or another. We need to get Oakland to make the public space around the encampment uninhabitable (I propose removing the sidewalk along the onramp and planting bamboo - everyone loves 'green'). Then CalTrans will be forced to manage a situation that is solely on their property. Does that make sense? Otherwise, it's back and forth until the world ends.

Nothing was fixed. The mayor has given the following directives: living in a car is legal, however, being a nuisance (dumping trash, illegal behavior) is means to call. They aren't going to kick these people out. So, keep posting. Keep calling. 510-777-3333. As soon as you hear a voice, push 1 for English, then push 0 to speak with a dispatcher. You don't need to go through the menus. Call everyday. Call multiple times. I have called four times today. And this is my fifth attempt to have something addressed.

Also SCF is a good way to document as the City cannot scrub this information. In my conversations with OPD if you call they will go out what they are not doing is citing these criminals even when they see them break the law. Under prop 47 the police can only write a ticket if the theft or the damage is less than 950 dollars. When cited they have to appear. These street people have used there tax payed fund legal teams to get these ticket throw out because they are indigent and are not going to pay anyway. So the police just stopped writing them. I am very unhappy with blatant double standard.
